SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team split during the final day of the Augustana tournament on Saturday. MSUM swept Truman State 25-18, 25-22, 25-22 to open the day and capped off the day with a 28-26, 25-18, 25-15 loss to South Dakota Mines.
The Dragons finished 3-5 in nonconference matches.
Against Truman, junior outside hitter Bridget Witzmann had 19 kills while junior middle blocker Tori Thompson had nine.
Freshman defensive specialist Macie Wieman had a career-high 25 digs while Witzmann had 11.
Freshman setter Emily Skalicky had a career-high 43 set assists. Thompson had two solo blocks and three assists.
A big run turned the tide of the first set. Truman State built a 14-10 lead but MSUM scored eight points in a row — which included three kills from Witzmann and a kill and block assist each from Thompson and junior right side hitter Teeya Doppler, to take an 18-14 lead on its way to a 25-18 win.
The Dragons trailed in set two 17-12 at one point with but scored five in a row, which included an ace from Skalikcy and a kill and a block from sophomore Jadyn Feist, to tie the set at 17-17. The set was tied at 21-21 before the Dragons scored four of the final five points to take a 25-22 win. Witzmann and Doppler had kills to give the Dragons the win.
The Dragons controlled the third set and held off a late challenge to take a 25-22 win.
Against South Dakota Mines, Witzmann had to 10 kills while senior middle blocker Elise Bakke had eight. Skalicky had 27 set assists.
Skalicky led with 15 digs while Wiemann had 13 and junior defensive specialist Brooke Walthall had 11. Bakke had two solo blocks and an assist.
The first set was close as MSUM moved ahead 26-25 as Skalicky and Thompson teamed up for a kill. The Hardrockers would score the final three points on their way to a 28-26 win.
From there, SD Mines had the momentum, winning the final two sets 25-18 and 25-15.
MSUM hit .109 for the match compared to .248 for the Hardrockers.
The Dragons will make their 2022 home debut on Sept. 9 — and open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play as well — on Sept. 9 against Minnesota Crookston. The match begins at 6 p.m.
