MSUM Fights Back, but Falls in Overtime to SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn. – Down by as many as 13 points, the MSU Moorhead women's basketball team battled back to take Southwest Minnesota State to overtime. Despite the effort, MSUM fell to the Mustangs 82-75.

The first frame saw both the Dragons and Mustangs struggle to shoot the ball. MSUM finished the first quarter shooting just 37.5 percent from the field to Southwest's 30 percent. While Peyton Boom scored four points for the Dragons, the senior went down with an apparent ankle injury midway through the first 10 minutes. Terryn Johnson added a needed four points in Boom's absence as the Mustangs led the Dragons 15-14 through one quarter.

Boom returned to the floor in the second quarter and helped MSUM jump out to a 9-0 run to begin the second quarter. The Barnesville, Minn., native scored four points coupled with a Natalie Jens three to bring the Dragons lead to 23-15.

The Mustangs would regain the lead thanks to back-to-back-to-back three pointers. Seven of SMSU's last eight field goals in the half were three-pointers. MSUM would still stay within striking distance heading into halftime despite Southwest's hot second quarter shooting. The Mustangs led 38-33 at the break. Boom had nine points and six rebounds at half with Olivia Skibiel pitching in seven points of her own.

Both teams would cool off to start the second half with MSUM and SMSU only mustering seven points apiece in the first five minutes of play in the second half. The Mustangs concluded the quarter on a 12-8 run to expand their lead to 57-48. Peyton Boom led the Dragons to that point with 13 points.

The Dragons would trim the Mustang lead to two points with under five minutes remaining behind baskets from Peyton Boom and Bailey Keske. MSUM would tie the game at 66 apiece with just under one minute remaining in the contest after being down by as many as 13 points. That score would hold true through regulation with the game heading to a five-minute overtime period.

Southwest would control most of the overtime frame, outscoring the Dragons 16-9 to take a 82-75 win.
