MSUM Pays Visits to Augie, Southwest Minnesota State This Weekend

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead volleyball will begin a four-match road swing this weekend, playing Augustana on Friday before facing off with sixth-ranked Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday. The weekend begins against the Vikings at 7 p.m. from the Sanford Pentagon.

MSUM (7-14, 3-9 NSIC) is coming off a pair of home losses at the hands of Sioux Falls and top-ranked Wayne State last weekend. The Cougars took home a straight sets win on Friday night before the Wildcats swept the Dragons on Saturday afternoon. MSUM is led offensively by Bridget Witzmann, who has tallied 250 kills so far this season to move her career total to 905 kills. Abby Thompson hits for a team-best .317 percentage while Emily Skalicky drives the Dragon offense forward with 338 set assists so far this season. Tori Thompson and Jadyn Feist lead MSUM with 40 total blocks this season with Feist tallying 27 block assists.

Kari Thompson is in her first season as MSUM's head coach.

Scouting Augustana

Augustana (8-13, 5-7 NSIC) is coming off a a four-set loss to Southwest Minnesota State on Tuesday to move their NSIC record to 5-7. Augie would take the second set before the Mustangs claimed the final two to earn the victory. Graduate student Kia Kriener leads Augustana this season with 274 kills in 2023, hitting for a .208 clip on the season. Junior setter Lucy Bartee helps arrange the Viking offense, tallying 805 set assists on the season. Defensively, Augustana is paced by sophomore Maya Wente, who has compiled 70 total blocks this season including 51 block assists. 

Jennifer Jacobs is in her seventh season at the helm of Augustana volleyball.

Scouting Southwest Minnesota State

The Mustangs (19-3, 10-2 NSIC) defeated Augustana in four sets on Tuesday night and will meet up with Northern State on Friday prior to playing the Dragons. Freshman Leah Jones leads the Mustangs with 236 kills this season followed closely by junior Saari Kuehl with 203 kills. Senior setter Alisa Bengen leads the team with 809 set assists so far this season. Junior Emma VanHeel leads the Southwest Minnesota State efforts at the net with 69 total blocks including 52 block assists. 

Tyler Boddy is in his second season as head coach of the Mustangs.
