MSUM Swept By Mavericks in Friday Night Tilt

MANKATO, Minn. -- While competitive sets were evident on Friday evening from the Taylor Center, MSU Moorhead volleyball fell in straight sets to Minnesota State.

Set one saw the Dragons earn a 14-10 lead thanks to kills from Abby Thompson and Jadyn Feist. A kill from Bridget Witzmann would keep some distance between the two schools, as the Dragons led 16-14. Minnesota State would rally back to take an 19-18 lead late in the set with a kill from Maci Martini tying the match at 19 points each. The Mavericks would outscore the Dragons 6-3 down the stretch in the frame to take the set 25-22.

Minnesota State would jump out in front in the second set, 10-8. With that two-point advantage, Minnesota State would go on a 5-0 run to push the lead to seven points. Three of those five points came from Dragon attack errors. MSUM would only come as close as four points in the set as Minnesota State would eventually hit set point, 24-17. While the Dragon would respond with two points, one a kill from Bridget Witzmann, it would not overcome the Maverick lead. Minnesota State won set two 25-19.

Set three would open with a trading of blows between the two teams before the Mavericks went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-8 lead. MSUM would score on the ensuing rally before Minnesota State made another massive run, this time a 5-0 stretch with two Dragon errors in that midst. The Dragons would respond with a run of their own, scoring six straight points with a kill from Witzmann and five Maverick errors. Later in the frame, Minnesota State would hold a 22-16 lead before the Dragons made one final push, scoring four consecutive points thanks to a trio of kills from Jadyn Feist. Minnesota State would answer right back with three straight points to take the set and the match.
