MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead battled back and forth in their final match of 2023, but the Dragons could not find enough answers to defeat Minnesota State. The Mavericks defeated the Dragons on Senior Day in straight sets.
Minnesota State would take a first set win behind a .256 hitting percentage as the Dragons struggled offensively in the early going. MSUM tallied a .128 hitting percentage in the frame, including seven attack errors.
Bridget Witzmann registered four kills in the stanza for the Dragons, but three Maverick blocks proved pivotal in the set, as Minnesota State would win it 25-20.
The Mavericks would also command the second set, winning 25-18 as the Dragons continued to struggle with efficiency. MSUM would hit for a -0.61 hitting percentage in the frame. Minnesota State would register five massive blocks in the set as MSUM struggled to place their attacks. The Dragons also had eight attack errors in the set.
MSUM had its best chance at a set win in the third set as they would race out to a commanding 19-14 lead, as Minnesota State was forced to take a timeout after a Dragons flurry. The Dragons would eventually push that lead to 21-15 before the Mavericks scored nine consecutive points to take a 24-21 lead. The Mavericks would put the finishing touches on the match with a 25-23 set win.
MSUM finishes its season with a 7-20 overall record.
