Dragons Muscle Past St. Cloud State, 57-48

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead women's basketball earned their second win in as many days behind a 46-33 rebounding advantage as the Dragons scratched and clawed past St. Cloud State, 57-48 on Saturday evening.

How The Game Was Won
  • MSUM raced out to a 17-5 first quarter lead as the Dragon defense was stingy against a potent St. Cloud State offense.
  • The Huskies were held to just two of 16 shooting through 10 minutes (12.5 percent), including a one of eight ledger from three-point range.
  • The Dragons shot 44.4 percent from the floor through one quarter to build the lead.
  • Both teams scored 10 points in the second quarter as MSUM would lead 27-15 after one half. St. Cloud State would again struggle from the floor, making just four of 13 attempts in the second quarter.
  • While St. Cloud State would outpace MSUM 21-10 in the third period, MSUM would still lead 37-36 after three quarters. The Huskies shot an improved 69.2 percent in the frame while MSUM was just one of nine from the field.
  • In the final 10 minutes, MSUM would grind out the victory on both ends of the floor despite shooting 27.2 percent in the stanza.
  • The Dragon defense would force four crucial turnovers in the fourth quarter to help pull in front.
  • Terryn Johnson and Abby Berge were key stalwarts for MSUM all game as Johnson reeled in a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. This included four offensive rebounds with two coming in the final period.
  • Berge closed down the game for the Dragons thanks to her terrific prowess from the charity stripe. The freshman made all eight of her free throw attempts in the game.
  • St. Cloud State was held to just three of 15 from the field in the final stanza including a one of six mark from long range.
  • MSUM would win the game, in part, due to their dominance on the glass. The Dragons had 13 more rebounds than the Huskies in the game.
  • For the weekend, MSUM outrebounded their opponents 95-65.

Nolan Schmidt's Stat of the Game

December 9 happens to be assistant coach Allison Swenson's birthday. In her time as a player and coach for the Dragons, MSUM is 5-1 all-time on Swenson's birthday. The lone loss came on December 9, 2003 against Nebraska-Kearney when Swenson was redshirting for the Dragons. MSUM has won the last five games on her birthday dating back to an 83-78 win over Bemidji State on December 9, 2006. Before tonight, the last birthday win for Swenson was last season, a 68-42 victory over Bemidji State.
