ROSEMONT, Ill. – In their first two contests of the five-game Lewis Dome Invitational, MSU Moorhead softball collected two wins over Ursuline College and Ferris State. The victories bring the Dragon win total to 10 in as many games so far this season.
MSUM had a stirring seventh-inning rally to defeat Ursuline 6-5 thanks to a walk-off single from freshman
Azalya Lopez. In game two of the tournament, the Dragons defeated Ferris State 8-3 behind four RBIs from
Mack Gallagher.
Dragons 6, Arrows 5
It would be MSUM who would open up the scoring in the bottom of the third inning.
Evey Evans stepped into the box with
Avery Steffen on second following a fielder's choice. Evans cracked one over the right-field fence to score herself and Steffen. The Dragons took an early 2-0 lead thanks to the homer.
Ursuline would not respond until the top of the fifth inning, plating five runs. The Dragons would get on the board in the bottom half of the inning as
Avery Steffen scored on an Arrow error. Through five innings, Ursuline led 5-3. With their backs against the wall, MSUM would respond in the bottom of the sixth, knotting the game at five thanks to a home run from
Eliya Johnson, bringing in herself and
Ella Holiman.
MSUM would load the bases with one out in the bottom half of the seventh inning. With
Eliya Johnson grounding into a fielder's choice for the second out, the Dragons had one more shot at the win.
Azalya Lopez stepped to the plate and worked the count to 2-1 before casting a single into right field, scoring
Lizzy Davis. With the hit, MSUM took the contest 6-5.
Evans pitched a strong top half of the seventh inning to earn the win for the Dragons.
Kaelyn Leverson started in the circle, throwing three and one-third innings and striking out two Arrows.
Dragons 8, Bulldogs 3
In game two of the day, MSUM would drive in a run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Ferris State would put up three runs in the bottom half of the third before MSUM would respond once again. The Dragons would score three runs in the top of the fourth inning to attain a 4-3 lead.
MSUM would keep the Bulldog offense under wraps for the remainder of the game. The Dragons would tack on four insurance runs in the top half of the sixth to solidify the victory. Behind
Mack Gallagher's four RBIs, MSUM defeated Ferris State 8-3. Gallagher had two doubles in the game while the Dragons worked out 10 walks in the game.
Azalya Lopez,
Annika Norman and
Jordey Brown-Smith all drove in runs for the Dragons. The senior Brown-Smith also stole a base in the win.
Eliya Johnson picked up the win for MSUM, pitching three innings and only surrendering three hits with a strikeout.
