MOORHEAD, Minn. – It was not pretty at times, but in the backend game of the weekend's double-header, MSU Moorhead bested St. Cloud State 83-68. Five Dragons scored in double figures in the win.
Both teams would battle back and forth for most the first half with the Dragons largest lead coming midway through the frame. That eight point lead would be the largest either team would possess in the first half. The Huskies led by as much five early in the first half and would shoot an even 50 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.
Despite the Dragons shooting only 40.6 percent (23.1 percent from three) in the first half, they were still able to hold a 37-34 halftime lead.
Jaden Stanley-Williams and
Lorenzo McGhee woyuld combine to score 18 points in the first half.
MSUM would come out guns ablazing in the second half, controlling the scoreboard and not reliquishing their halftime lead. Although St. Cloud State would trim the defecit to as little as three points, monster long range shots from Stanley-Williams and
Gavin Baumgartner would keep the Dragons in front. Stanley-Williams would score a game-high 22 points (a new career-high), making three out of four three-point attempts in the game. McGhee, Baumgartner,
Jacob Beeninga and
Dane Zimmer would all total double figures by game's end.
The Dragons shot a blazing 56.3 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes to capture the 83-68 win. In the victory, MSUM would outrebound St. Cloud State 40-29. In the win,
Lorenzo McGhee came that much closer to 1,000 career points, bringing his total to 951 for his Dragon career.
