Dragons Feast in Game Two, Split with Mavericks

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- MSU Moorhead softball regrouped following a 7-1 game one loss to run rule the Minnesota State Mavericks 13-3 in game two in a neutral site doubleheader on Sunday.

The game two win over Minnesota State is the first time the Dragons have defeated the Mavericks since Minnesota State joined the NSIC in 2008. The last time MSUM defeated MSU was on April 25, 2004, when the Mavericks were still a member of the North Central Conference.

In the win, Mack Gallagher reset the single-season school record for home runs following her 10th of the season. Senior Jordey Smith smashed a grand slam following Gallagher's homer to jumpstart the Dragons to victory.

Game One

MSUM would tally the first hits of the ballgame in the bottom of the second thanks to a pair of one-baggers from Azalya Lopez and Jordey Smith. Both Dragons got on with one out in the inning, but MSUM was unable to bring either around to break the 0-0 tie. Mankato would take advantage the next half inning with two hits and a home run to pull in front 2-0. Eliya Johnson started in the circle for MSUM and struck out two Mavericks prior to surrendering a single and the long ball.

The Dragons would slice that deficit in half in bottom half of the inning as both Teagan Pranchke and Mack Gallagher would reach on singles. Pranchke would be put out on a fielder's choice with Lizzy Davis and Gallagher on first and second with Evey Evans up to bat. Evans doubled to score Davis and push Gallagher to third, giving MSUM their fifth hit of the game. However, the Dragons were unable to tie the game, leaving Gallagher and Evans in scoring position. Mankato would only answer in the fourth, plating three runs on three hits on Avery Steffen, who came on in relief of Johnson.

MSUM would surrender two more runs in the fifth inning to give the Mavs a 7-1 lead. The Dragons would be unable to put together any offensive threats in the later stages of the game as MSUM would not register a hit from the fourth inning on. Maverick pitcher McKayla Armbruster slung a complete game, striking out seven MSUM batters in the 7-1 win.

Game Two

Mankato would score two runs on a Dragon error in the top of the first inning. The Mavericks would get two hits in the frame on Azalya Lopez, who started in the circle, but both runs would go unearned due to the blunder.

Mack Gallagher would make history in home half of the frame with her 10th home run of the season. The two-run tater surpasses the previous MSUM single-season record held by Sonjia Schuurmans that has stood since 2005. It also tied the game at two runs apiece early in the contest. The home run would jumpstart the Dragon bats, who would go on to score a total of nine runs on eight hits in the inning.

Avery Steffen and Hannah Losee would have RBI hits and would help load the bases for Jordey Smith. The senior would launch one over the left field fence for the grand slam with Gallagher knocking in a run for good measure on a single during the next at-bat. While the Mavs would score an unearned run the following inning, the MSUM offense would continue to feast on Mankato pitching in the home half. The Dragons scored four more runs in the inning, bringing the score to 13-3. In the frame, Losee and Lizzy Davis would single in runs as Smith would knock in her sixth RBI of the contest on a two RBI double.

The 13-3 scoreline would hold up through five innings as the Dragons tallied 13 hits in the run rule victory.
