ST. CLOUD, Minn. – MSU Moorhead worked for a doubleheader split with Bemidji State on Monday afternoon from St. Cloud. The Beaver took game one 6-4 before the Dragons responded with a 5-3 win.
With the split, MSUM moved to 17-7 overall and 5-1 in NSIC play.
Game One
The Dragons would jump out in front early in game one thanks to some Beaver fielding woes.
Lizzy Davis reached base on an error which eventually led to
Evey Evans scoring to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead in the first.
Mack Gallagher would single later in the inning to score Davis to make the score 2-0.
Gallagher would put MSUM up by four runs thanks to a two-run blast that scored her and Evans. The dinger was Gallagher's eighth home run of the season, one shy of tying the MSUM single-season school record.
Brynna Farman would start the game in the circle for the Dragons, pitching a strong two and two-thirds innings, only allowing one Beaver hit.
Reece Dahl would come on in the third inning as Bemidji State would score three runs on Dahl in the fourth inning to bring the score to 4-3.
The Beavers would tie the game in the fifth inning and would plate the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth. Bemidji State would score an insurance run in the seventh to secure a 6-4 win.
Game Two
Evey Evans would leadoff the game for MSUM with her fifth home run of the season to give the Dragons an early 1-0 lead. MSUM would strike again in the second as
Annika Norman would single to drive in
Jordey Smith, who reached base earlier in the inning on a ground-rule double. With a 2-0 lead heading into the third inning, the Beavers would score three runs in the top half of the frame to take a 3-2 lead.
Once again, MSUM would take advantage of Bemidji State fielding errors to take command of the scoreboard. Gallagher and
Eliya Johnson would reach base with
Kiley Washnieski and
Grace Oeltjen pinch running for the pair. Both would steal bases to get into scoring position. Smith would then reach on a pair of Beaver errors, which scored both Oeltjen and Washnieski, giving the Dragons a 4-3 lead.
Johnson would continue her strong day at the plate with an RBI double in the fifth inning to give MSUM a 5-3 advantage.
Evey Evans would pitch three impressive innings down the stretch in the game, only surrendering two hits in 11 batters faced. MSUM's 5-3 lead would hold true with the Dragons picking up their fifth conference win of the year.
