Dragon Volleyball Battles, Eventually Drops NSIC Opener to Beavers

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead volleyball fell in the first two sets of their NSIC and home opener on Friday evening, only to even the match with Bemidji State. However, the Beavers were able to grab the pivotal fifth set for a 3-2 win.

Bemidji State owned the first two sets of the match as the Beavers would begin the match on a 5-0 run. The Beavers would build a lead as large as seven points before the Dragons began to work back into the set. Three Bemidji State errors and a kill from Jadyn Feist brought the Dragons to within three points. MSUM would even grab a 16-14 lead later in the set thanks to kill from Bridget Witzmann, Tori Thompson and an Emily Ramsay service ace. As set point was within grasp, MSUM held a 24-21 lead over the Beavers before Bemidji State went on a 5-0 run to steal the set 26-24.

The second set continued to go Bemidji State's way as a 10-0 Beaver run brought the score to 15-8. The Beavers stretched that lead to eight points (19-11) at one point in the set. Kills from Tori Thompson and and Jadyn Feist would pull the Dragons to within five points, but Bemidji State would take the frame 25-18.

MSUM began to stir in the third set with the match hanging in the balance. While the Beavers would take an early lead, MSUM utilized a 5-0 run to take command of the set by a score of 8-7. Witzmann and Abby Thompson each had kills midway through the frame to give MSUM a three-point lead (16-13). However, Bemidji State would knot the game at 16 points thanks to a trio of kills. The two teams would trade blows before the Dragons went on a 4-0 spurt to bring them a 24-20 lead. Bridget Witzmann would nail a kill to close the set and keep the Dragons alive.

In the fourth set, the two teams traded the first eight points of the set as Raiah Mandell helped give MSUM an 8-6 lead. Witzmann and Maci Martini gave MSUM a six-point lead midway through the frame. Bemidji State would respond with a 5-0 run to bring the score to within one point. MSUM would finish the set on a 7-2 run to tie the match at two sets apiece.

The Dragons would fall into a deep hole in the deciding fifth set, going down 8-3 to the Beavers. It proved to be too much to overcome for MSUM as the Dragons would bring the set to within four points before Bemidji State finished the contest with a kill.
