KENOSHA, Wis. – MSU Moorhead volleyball showcased their resiliency once again as the Dragon battled back for a five-set win over Truman State at the Hampton Inn Invitational.
MSUM would build a lead as large as six points in the first set before Truman State regrouped. The Bulldogs went on a 4-0 run midway through the set as a result of three Dragon attack errors. Truman State would cut the Dragon lead to one point (14-13) and would later tie the set at 15 points. The Dragons would respond with a 6-0 run thanks to kills from
Abby Thompson and
Raiah Mandell. While the teams would go back and forth near the end of the set, MSUM would come out on top with a 25-21 set win. The Bulldogs would hit just .069 for the set.
The second and third set were owned by the Bulldogs as they would gain an early four-point advantage to begin the second set. MSUM would not regain control of the set despite pulling the it to within two points (22-20) on a service ace from
Bridget Witzmann. However, the Bulldogs would finish off the set, winning 25-22. In the third set, Truman State would open up on a 5-0 run and would once again gain control of the frame. MSUM would tie the set at seven points early, but the Bulldogs would gain the lead and not relinquish it once again, winning the frame 25-19.
MSUM would rebound in the fourth set with the match hanging in the balance. The Dragons would hit a 5-0 run early in the set to build a seven-point lead thanks to kills from Witzmann and
Emily Skalicky. MSUM would go on another four-point run midway through the set with kills from Witzmann,
Jadyn Feist and
Megan Klein. The Dragons would not look back from there, taking the set 25-16.
In the pivotal final set, MSUM dominated the court, going on a 9-1 run to earn an 11-3 lead. Feist and Thompson each had a pair of kills in that run. Match point would come at the hands of
Bridget Witzmann, who slammed down a kill to secure a 15-7 set win.
