MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead wrestling saw tremendous efforts from
Thomas Carrillo and
Gunnar Mogen in dual competition against Minnesota State on Thursday evening. The Mavericks took the dual win inside Nemzek Fieldhouse, 30-6.
Minnesota State would take the 125-pound bout by major decision to take a quick 4-0 lead. From there,
Thomas Carrillo would continue his stretch of excellence on the mat in the 133-pound match. The sophomore would earn a swift takedown of MSU's Andrew Weiss and almost immediately turned Weiss over for the ever-valuable four-point near fall. Carrillo would only add to his point total in the second period with another takedown as Carrillo spent a majority of the match in the top position. The Rio Rancho, N.M., product racked up over four minutes of riding time to earn a bonus point and collect a 10-5 win. Carrillo will carry a three match winning streak into MSUM's next dual.
The Dragon momentum would only grow from there as
Gunnar Mogen would use his quick hands to build a lead on Minnesota State's Max Schwabe. Mogen scored a slick reversal with a headlock move to build a 5-0 advantage on Schwabe. Mogen would gain over two minutes or riding time throughout the match and the bonus point did prove important late in the bout. While Schwabe attempted a late comeback, Mogen would earn his ninth win of the season with a 9-5 decision.
MSUM would battle at the two heavy weights to close the dual as
Isaiah Huus would lose a narrow decision to Shane Gibson. Huus and Gibson spent the final minute of their match in the neutral position with Huus needing a takedown to even the score. However, Gibson would stave off the offense and take the match, 8-5. To close the dual,
Airin Spell would take Minnesota State's Tanner Gaffney to the limit at heavyweight with Spell possessing a 2-1 late in the third period. Spell earned his points thanks to a second period escape and a stalling call on Gaffney. With both competitors in the neutral position with time waning, Gaffney would collect the match-winning takedown with less than five seconds remaining.
