ST. PAUL, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead volleyball ran into a red hot Concordia, St. Paul team on Saturday afternoon in NSIC action. The 13th-ranked Golden Bears defeated the Dragons in straight sets.
Fresh off a top-25 win over Northern State on Friday evening, Concordia, St. Paul would continue its hot streak, building an 11-2 lead in the first set. The Golden Bears would extend that advantage to 13 points (17-4) later in the set as Concordia, St. Paul commanded both sides of the net. Eventually, CSP would lead 22-6, and would win the set, 25-8. The Golden Bears would hit for an unimaginable .560 mark in the first set compared to MSUM's .033 mark.
Three kills from
Raiah Mandell to begin the second set helped MSUM settle in on the scoreboard.
Abby Thompson would even the frame at five points before CSP raced in front by three points. The Golden Bear lead would expand to five points midway through the set (14-9) before MSUM's offense began to stir. MSUM would hit on a 4-0 run thanks to kills from Mandell, Thompson and
Mya Pfeifer. The burst pulled the set to within one point before Concordia, St. Paul fired right back to re-extend the lead to four (17-13). A nice block assist from Thompson and
Halle Erickson would again bring the Dragons to within one point (18-17). The Golden Bear lead would remain at one point (19-18) before the home club striped six straight points to swiftly take the second set. MSUM hit for an improved .212 mark while the Golden Bears were still efficient at a .314 clip.
Concordia, St. Paul would keep its foot on the gas in a deciding third set, racing out to a 10-4 lead before two kills from Thompson trimmed the deficit to four points. The Golden Bears would then outscore the Dragons, 6-2, to build an eight-point lead (17-9). MSUM would answer slightly, but Concordia, St. Paul would create a lead as large as ten points (21-11) late in the frame. A kill from
Maci Martini would cut the score to nine points before the Golden Bears buttoned up the set, winning 25-14. Concordia, St. Paul hit for another crazy mark in the final set with a .517 clip. For the match, Concordia, St. Paul hit for a whopping .449 percentage compared to MSUM's .122 mark. The Golden Bears only committed six errors all game to go along with nine service aces.
