MSUM Stumbles Against 23rd-Ranked Tigers

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- MSU Moorhead women's basketball struggled from the floor and dropped their second game at the Central Region Showcase. The Dragons were bested by 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State, 65-41.

MSUM would see some struggle offensively in the first quarter as Fort Hays State created a lead as large as 15 points (21-6) late in the first period. A three from Natalie Jens helped the Dragons offensively, but the Tigers would hold the Dragons without a basket for nearly five minutes. Ayelishka Teko-Folly would score to bring the count to 21-8 after one quarter.

The resilient Adie Wagner would net her first career points at the top of the second frame to bring the Dragons closer, trailing 21-11. MSUM would come to within single digits with under seven minutes to play after a basket from DJ Davis and a triple from Ashley Fritz. Before halftime, Fort Hays State would stretch its lead back out to 14 points with the Tigers leading 33-19 at the break. MSUM would be held below 30 percent shooting through 20 minutes of play.

To open the third quarter, the Tigers would build a lead as large as 24 points midway through the quarter as MSUM again struggled to score. Tori Ratz would connect on a three, but Fort Hays State continued to look sharp on both ends. A late free throw from Terryn Johnson would put the Tiger lead at 20 points heading into the final 10 minutes. MSUM would be held to just 18.8 percent shooting in the third period.

While MSUM would get the score as close as 19 points early in the fourth, the lead proved too insurmountable as Fort Hays State would grab a 28-point advantage late in the fourth. The Tigers forced the Dragons into 24 turnovers and won the contest, 65-41. The Dragons shot 25.5 percent from the floor for the game.
