Dragons Deal Northern State Overtime Loss

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead women's basketball came roaring back late against visiting Northern State on Thursday evening. The Dragons pushed the Wolves to overtime, eventually winning, 73-70. 

Inside The Game
  • MSUM would lead 2-0 early after a basket from Terryn Johnson, it would be one of two leads for the Dragons in regulation. 
  • Ashton Safranski buried a three late in the first quarter to keep MSUM up, 7-5. Northern State would lead 12-9 after 10 minutes. 
  • The Wolves would lead by as many as six points in the second frame with MSUM coming as close as two points after free throws from Abby Berge
  • NSU led 29-26 at the break after shooting 50 percent from the floor in the second frame. 
  • Safranski and Natalie Jens connected on three-pointers early in the second half to keep the Dragons within two points (35-33).
  • Emily Srejma would score on a fastbreak layup (with a lovely pass from Caylin Kelly) to make the score 37-36 in favor of the Wolves. 
  • Northern State would close the quarter strong, leading by six points, 49-43. 
  • The Wolves would possess a lead of eight points (55-47) early in the final period.
  • Karlee Fisher and Jens would net triples to get the Dragons back within four points with over six minutes to play. 
  • Jens would score the next seven points for MSUM, followed by another three from Safranski to tie the game at 62 points. 
  • Safranski would tie the game again with a driving layup with just over a minute to play. MSUM would use stout defense to limit the Wolves throughout the remainder of regulation. 
  • Tied a 64 early in overtime, Jens made a free throw followed by another score from Safranski to give MSUM its first lead since early in the first quarter. 
  • Ashley Fritz and Berge would would make six of six freebies down the stretch to help the Dragons edge out the Wolves, 73-70. 
  • Safranski scored a career high 18 points to go along with three steals.

The Dragons are now 3-0 all-time against Northern State in overtime. MSUM posted home wins over the Wolves on December 18, 2017 (64-61) and February 4, 2006 (61-52).
