Dragon Wrestling Storms Back to Defeat Sioux Falls

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. – MSU Moorhead wrestling would win the final seven matches in dual competition against Sioux Falls on Saturday evening as the Dragons claimed a 29-16 victory over the Coo.

MSUM would fall down by 16 team points early as the Dragons struggled at the lighter weights before Gunnar Mogen stepped to the mat at 149 pounds. Mogen would earn two takedowns in his match with Cooper Sanders while also snagging four near fall points. The junior provided some needed team points for the Dragons, picking up a bonus point in a 13-9 decision win. Cody Wienen and Jacob Reinardy would each follow suit with decision wins at 157 pounds and 165 pounds. Both Wienen and Reinardy used near fall points to their advantage as they would combine for six across the two matches. The victories also pulled the Dragons closer in the team race, 16-9.

Wayne Mellon would be embattled in a low-scoring affair, but would earn an escape in the third period to build a 1-0 lead. Mellon would remain in the top position throughout the second period to build the necessary ride time to earn a bonus point. The redshirt freshman would win 2-0 over Ashtin Johnson at 174 pounds. Will Price would then put on a show at 184 pounds against Tim Lacina. Price would build a sizable lead behind near fall points before sticking Lacina at 4:13 in the second period. The win put the Dragons back on top in the team score as MSUM now led 18-16.

197-pounder Isaiah Huus would hold the advantage throughout his entire match with Isaiah Laguna. Huus earned a bevy of near fall points as well as some hard-fought takedowns on Laguna. Huus would collect a takedown and two near fall points in the final 10 seconds to collect a 16-1 technical fall win. Huus earned a bonus point to move what was a major decision to a technical fall. To close the match, Airin Spell earned a swift 7-1 lead on Rocky Wiedman Jr. with a takedown and four-point near fall. Spell would go on to pin Wiedman Jr. in the second period at 3:53.
