MOORHEAD, Minn. – MSU Moorhead wrestling earned four big wins in dual competition against Eighth Street neighbor Concordia College on Friday evening. The Cobbers took the team score, 27-17
Concordia would claim the first four matches before
Airin Spell stepped to the mat to face off with Mason Swanson. Spell would showcase his offensive ability throughout the bout, racking up 16 total points with a variety of takedowns, near falls and reversal points. Ultimately, Spell would work towards a 16-7 major decision victory over Swanson.
MSUM would control the final three matches of the evening beginning with senior
Hunter Hayes at 141 pounds. Hayes would dominate in his bout with Gabirel Bellefeuille and would rack up over two minutes of riding time en route to a 12-1 major decision.
Gunnar Mogen would then put on what was potentially the finest performance of the night for MSUM at 149 pounds. Mogen trailed 6-4 in the third period to Concordia's Kellen Schauer with Schauer holding a ride time point in the moment. With time waning in the third period, Mogen would cradle Schauer to the mat for three points and immediately get Schauer in a precarious near fall scenario. Mogen had tallied four near fall points, but it did not matter as the junior planted both of Schauer's blades on the mat for a pin with 11 seconds remaining.
To close the dual,
Cody Wienen would muscle out to a lead early against Tyler Bents and would hold a ride time point in the third period. Leading 10-8 in the third period, Wienen would score a late takedown to seal a decision victory over Bents, 14-9.
