ORLANDO, Fla. – MSU Moorhead tennis would conclude its Spring Break trip to Florida by splitting the final two matches to Ohio Northern and Warner University.
MSUM would fall in a Wednesday night matchup against the Polar Bears, 4-3. To close play in Florida, MSUM defeated the Royals on clay, 7-0.
Wednesday night's matchup against the Polar Bears turned into a match filled with tiebreakers and intrigue. Ohio Northern would win the doubles point with wins at the number two and three positions. However, MSUM would be able to salvage a win as the number one pairing of
Luzmary Diaz Castillo and
Shaelyn Johnson would handle business in a 6-3 win. It was the duo's fifth win of the season.
Castillo would also win at number one doubles to help even the team score at one point. The sophomore earned a straight sets win over Jenna Bell, her fifth singles win of the year. While MSUM had losses at number two and three singles,
Katryna Hansen had what was potentially the strongest performance of the evening. The true freshman would rally for a 7-6 win in set one against Katie O'Connell with the game requiring a tiebreaker, which Hansen won 7-4. To close the match, another marathon set broke out and another tiebreaker ensued. The Moorhead, Minn., native would claim a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to win the set 7-6.
Madison Bell would find herself in a similar scenario in number five singles. Bell would need a 7-5 tiebreaker win to claim a victory in set one over Julianna Sheldon. The senior would rally again in a deciding set to win 7-5 and give the Dragons three team points. It was Bell's fourth singles win of the season. However, the Polar Bears would win at number six singles to help claim the 4-3 team win.
