GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – MSU Moorhead wrapped play at the Maverick Fall Classic on Saturday in a four-set win over Adams State .
MSUM would come out a little sluggish in the first set and the Grizzlies took full advantage, creating a 13-6 advantage early. A kill from
Emily Ramsay followed by a service ace from
Kiara Olesch would help cut that deficit to four points midway through the frame (15-11). However, Adams State would remain consistent throughout the opening set, keeping the Dragons at arm's length. MSUM would get the count as close as four points again after a kill from
Halle Erickson. Following the slam from the senior, Adams State would conclude the frame on a 5-2 run.
The Dragons would regroup in the second frame, tallying up a 7-0 run early in the set led by kills from Ramsay and
Abby Thompson.
Brielle Riess would pocket a service ace in the stretch while Thompson and
Raiah Mandell would collect another block assist. Mandell would later notch a kill to stretch the Dragon lead to eight points (12-4). MSUM would assert themselves late in the frame thanks to a 5-0 run which was capped by a block assist from Thompson and Riess. Ramsay and Riess would even the match, scoring kills on three of the last four rallies in the set.
MSUM would continue its winning ways into the third frame as the Dragons built a 10-7 lead, headlined by a block assist from Erickson and
Mya Pfeifer. Later in the set, the Dragons popped off a 5-0 run with kills from Ramsay and Riess while the freshman collected another service ace. The lead would remain at six points (20-14) later in the set after a block assist from Pfeifer and Mandell. To end the frame, MSUM would score five straight points as Ramsay earned back-to-back service aces.
In a deciding fourth set, the Dragons and Grizzlies would match each other in the early stages with the teams tied at 10 points. From there, MSUM would make another surge, scoring on six straight rallies where three different Dragons collected kills. Thompson added in block solo in the run. The ensuing three points for MSUM would come off Thompson kills before Pfeifer joined the action to make the count 20-14. Pfeifer would strike again to bring the Dragons to match point (24-16). While Adams State would reply with back-to-back points, a kill from
Annalise Wilson would wrap the match with an MSUM flavor.
Thompson was once again dazzling for the Dragons, earning 10 kills and five blocks to go along with a .625 hitting percentage. MSUM's defense was once again stern all around, tallying 27 total blocks and holding Adams State to a .164 success rate on attacks. Of the 27 total blocks for MSUM, Pfeifer accounted for 10 of them.
