ABERDEEN, S.D. – The opportunities did present themselves and MSU Moorhead soccer would turn in another solid 90-minute performance in Friday's NSIC opener. However, the Dragon would eventually fall to host Northern State, 3-0.
The match's start time was pushed back by nearly two hours following issues with MSUM's transportation.
"In a challenging day logistically, it was great to see the team get into a rhythm and posses the ball well," said MSUM head coach
Scott Forster. "Conceding took the wind out of our sails but it was good to see progress and learning."
MSUM would put the first shot on in the third minute as true freshman
Sophie Thompson fired a ball that missed left.
Jensen Seidel would collect a shot in the sixth minute that was blocked by the Wolves defense. Northern State would get their first shot off in the seventh minute, which also missed the goal.
The first shot on goal in the contest was not registered until the 31
st minute as freshman
Kraly Walker would get a chance close to the net. Unfortunately for Walker, Wolves keeper Alexus Townsend would stop the shot. Northern State would not get a chance on goal until the 35
th minute, but the Wolves would capitalize on the opportunity, scoring on Dragon keeper
Quinn Carter.
Carter would stop another Northern State attempt not long after and the junior would keep the score at 1-0 after another stalling in the 44
th minute. The Wolves would continue their offense in the second half, scoring again in the 60
th minute.
Becca Cook would have an opportunity on net in the 74
th minute for MSUM but was again stopped by Townsend near the goal.
As the match was dwindling, MSUM took another shot in the 82
nd minute off the leg of
Madalynn Hopkins. The attempt missed right with the Wolves responding with a shot of their own in the 84
th minute. MSUM would block the Northern State attempt, keeping the match at 2-0.
Marin Hensley would have a go in the 85
th minute with a shot that missed high from the top of the box. Northern State would put the game firmly out of reach near the 88
th minute with their third score.
Lilly Johnson would have a strike saved in the 89
th minute to preserve the 3-0 victory for Northern State.
In the contest, Hensley, Carter and
Sara Alfrida Munk Nielsen would play the full 90 for MSUM.
