MSUM Finishes Third at Dragon Invite

WEST FARGO, N.D. -- MSU Moorhead swimming & diving concluded competition at the annual Dragon Invite on Saturday. The Dragons finished in third place in the team standings behind 880 points. 

To open the morning session, Maggie Moore was MSUM's top finisher in the 200-yard freestyle. Moore finished sixth overall with a time of 2:03.7. In the 100-yard backstroke, senior Demi-Lee Carlisle was the top Dragon, clocking a 1:00.23 to place third. Teammate Kelsey Jackson would place sixth in the same event with a mark of 1:01.74 while Lacie Stark placed eighth with a time of 1:02.08. 

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Rose Urick clocked a 1:10.48 to finish in fifth place. Fernanda Leon would collect an event win in the 200-yard butterfly, marking a 2:09.15.  Leon would also place third in the 200-yard IM, touching the wall at 2:14.23. Ruth Pavelski placed ninth in the same event with a time of 2:18.98. In distance swimming, Cami Mayo would place sixth in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:26.32. In the 50-yard freestyle, Sophia Verke would earn a runner-up finish with a mark of 24.92 with Carlisle not far behind, placing third with a time of 25.16. 

In the evening session, the MSUM 400-yard medley team of Leon, Jackson, Urick and Verke would finish runner-up with a time of 4:05.8. The squad of Carlisle, Pavelski, Moore and Linnea Edgren would place fourth behind a mark of 4:10.56. Mayo would earn an eighth place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a finishing time of 5:35. Stark was the top MSUM finisher in the 50-yard backstroke, placing fourth with a time of 28.48. Carlisle (28.66) and Jackson (28.85) finished sixth and eighth respectively. Urick would place third in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 32.16 while Edgren (33.38) finished eighth. 

Verke would place third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.97. In the same race, MSUM had three other top ten finishes in Carlisle (56.46 -7th), Joanna Phillips (56.77 - 8th) and Moore (56.98 - 10th). Leon would place third in the 100-yard IM, notching a mark of 1:02.27 while Pavelski placed sixth with a time of 1:02.72. 

In 3-meter diving, Zoe Bjerke would be MSUM's top finisher, placing second with an 11-dive score of 370.45. Isabelle Johnson finished behind Bjerke in third with a score of 364.7. Ruth Guy would place sixth with an overall score of 319.05. 

The final event of the meet was the 400-yard freestyle relay, which saw the MSUM team of Moore, Pavelski, Carlisle and Verke win the event with a time of 3:38.91. The squad of Phillips, Leon, Taylor Cook and Lily Lengerich would place fourth with a time of 3:48.42.

MSUM returns to dual action next week as they travel to Aberdeen, S.D. for a 2 p.m. dual against Northern State on Saturday, January 18.
