MANKATO, Minn. – MSU Moorhead women's basketball fell in NSIC action on Friday night to 10
th-ranked Minnesota State. The Mavericks bested the Dragons, 94-66.
Minnesota State would race out on a 15-5 run early in the game with the lone MSUM baskets coming from
Natalie Jens and
Karlee Fisher. The Dragons would fall victim to five early turnovers, but many came in the halfcourt and not against Minnesota State's vaunted fullcourt press.
Adie Wagner would snap a Dragon dry spell to get the score within seven points.
Caylin Kelly would follow suit, sinking a triple for the Dragons to bring them within four points (15-11). Minnesota State would answer back, closing the first period on a 14-3 run to lead 29-14. MSUM's lone basket came on Fisher's second three-pointer of the frame. The second quarter would see Minnesota State extend its lead to 20 points before free throw makes from
Ashton Safranski and
Abby Berge provided some points for MSUM.
At halftime, Minnesota State led 56-30, forcing 21 Dragon turnovers. Fisher, Berge and Safranski led MSUM with six points each in the half. The Dragons shot 33.3 percent from the floor compared to Minnesota State's 51 percent clip.
Midway through the third period, Minnesota State had its largest lead of 27 points (64-37), but the Dragons continued to fight. Jens, Wagner and Berge all scored as part of a 7-3 Dragon run, capped by a three from Berge. The make forced a Maverick timeout as Kelly would score out of the break to keep the offensive pace. Minnesota State would lead 77-51 after three quarters. Berge led MSUM with 11 points.
While the Dragons continued to compete hard on both ends, Minnesota State's lead proved too large to overcome. The Mavericks won 94-66 as Berge led the Dragons with 13 points while Fisher and Wagner added 12 and 10 points respectively.
