MSUM Preps For Split Week with Wolves, Huskies

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Dragon women's basketball looks to extend its three-game winning streak in a pair of games this week. MSU Moorhead travels to Aberdeen, S.D., to take on Northern State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before hosting St. Cloud State on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Live stats and video will be available at msumdragons.com. Fans can listen to the game against the Huskies on AM 1100/FM 92.3 with Jace Denman and 'Big Game' James McCarty on the call.

Matchup History...The Dragons defeated the Wolves earlier this season on December 5, winning 73-70 in overtime. Prior to that win, Northern State had won four of the last six meetings between the two programs. The Dragons held a six-game winning streak over the Wolves from December 2017 until February  2021. MSUM will enter Saturday with a three-game winning streak over St. Cloud State. The Dragons topped the Huskies 63-55 on December 13, 2024.

Last Time Out...The Dragons extended their winning streak to three games thanks to wins over Augustana and Wayne State. Terryn Johnson led the way for the Dragons on Friday against the Vikings, scoring 13 points with 13 rebounds. Ashley Fritz added in 10 points for the Dragons. Against the Wildcats, Johnson again notched a double-double while Abby Berge led the team with 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Wind Cries Terry...Junior forward Terryn Johnson was sharp all weekend for the Dragons, averaging a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Johnson scored 13 points with 13 rebounds on Friday before scoring 13 points with 11 rebounds on Saturday. For the weekend, Johnson led the NSIC in field goal percentage, connecting on 80 percent (12-15) of her attempts. On Saturday against Wayne State, Johnson converted on all six of her field goal attempts, which ties the single-game school record held by Renee Olson. On January 22, 1992, Olson made all eight of her field goal attempts against Southwest Minnesota State.

Frenetic Fritzy...Sophomore guard Ashley Fritz turned in two of her best performances of the season last weekend. Fritz scored 10 points on five of seven shooting against Augustana. The Hastings, Minn., native would score four points against Wayne State, but turned in a stellar defensive showing. Fritz had three steals in the Dragon win, securing four steals across the two games.

Berge Nights...Sophomore Abby Berge had another pair of double figure scoring outputs for the Dragons last weekend. Berge scored 10 points on Friday before netting a team-best 15 points on Saturday. Heading into Thursday, Berge has scored 10 or more points in five consecutive games for the Dragons.

#SafranskiSteals...Freshman point guard Ashton Safranski led the NSIC in steals once again this past weekend, averaging four per game. On the season, Safranski has 50 total steals, a mark that is second in the NSIC. Safranski's steal count is also in the top 30 nationally. The freshman also finished the weekend averaging 5.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Let's Buckle Down...In their three-game winning streak, MSUM has returned to form defensively. Across the last three games, MSUM has only surrendered an average of 47.6 points per game. In the last three games, the Dragons have held opponents to just 34.1 percent shooting (57-167).

Quick Scout...Northern State will look to involve preseason NSIC Player of the Year Madelyn Bragg, who was held to just four of 11 shooting back on December 5. The Dragons also held Husky star Jada Eggebrecht to just four of 12 shooting in the squad's first matchup.

Karla Nelson is in her 25th season as MSUM's head women's basketball coach.
