Dragons Look to Feast on Golden Eagles, Nanooks at Home

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead women's baketball is set for a pair of home contests this week. The Dragons take on Minnesota Crookston to open NSIC play on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Alaska Fairbanks on Friday at 2 p.m.

Live stats and video will be available at msumdragons.com. Fans can tune into the game on the NSIC Network with Steve d'Eustachio on play-by-play and Jared Bledsoe on color commentary.

Matchup History...The Golden Eagles hold the most recent win in this long-time series, having defeated the Dragons 64-63 in Moorhead on December 21, 2024. Minnesota Crookston star guard Emma Miller poured in 31 points in last season's meeting. However, the Golden Eagles have only won three of the last 14 meetings overall. From February 2018 until December 2021, Moorhead held an eight-game win streak over Minnesota Crookston. Since the 2009 season, the Dragons have won 25 of 33 matchups with the Golden Eagles. Black Friday's tilt with the Nanooks will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Dragons on Black Friday...It's been a number of years since Moorhead last hosted a game on Black Friday. The last time the Dragons hosted a home contest the day after Thanksgiving was November 25, 1994 when the Dragons vanquished Dickinson State, 82-55.

Srejma Strikes Late...Senior Emily Srejma played a pivotal role in MSUM's overtime win over Central Missouri on November 18. With the score tied at 66 points, Srejma found herself with the ball in her hands with time waning. The Fargo, N.D., product hoisted a shot from just beyond the free throw line that banked home with less than 10 seconds remaining. The ensuing defensive effort held up for Moorhead with Srejma's shot providing a 68-66 victory. Srejma finished the game with four points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.

Berge Leads The Way...Junior Abby Berge helped guide the Dragons late against Central Missouri on Tuesday. The Sunburg. Minn., native scored a team-best 15 points on 41 percent shooting. Berge also notched four rebounds and made all five of her foul shots. Her late foul shots in regulation and overtime would tie the score for Moorhead. So far this season, Berge leads the Dragons in scoring average, putting in 11 points a game.

Stuffing The Box Score (Again)...Sophomore point guard Ashton Safranski had another signature performance against Central Missouri. Safranski scored 10 points in the Dragon victory while also leading the team with seven rebounds and four assists. The Fargo, N.D., also added to her steal total, collecting a pair against the Jennies. Safranski has averaged just over 10 points, five rebounds and four assists in MSUM's three games this season.

Terryn Owns The Paint...Senior forward Terryn Johnson provided needed offense in the paint for Moorhead against the Jennies. Although she 'fouled out', Johnson was able to score 13 points in just 23 minutes of action last Tuesday. The Kindred, N.D., native also snared five rebounds. In three games, Johnson has shot 52.2 percent from the floor.

Bringing The Spark...Junior guard Grace Massaquoi was excellent off the bench for Moorhead on November 18. Massaquoi scored six points, but had seven massive rebounds in the win, including four on the offensive glass.

Back In Friendly Confines...Tuesday's game against the Golden Eagles will be head coach Karla Nelson's 703rd game leading the Dragons. Tuesday also serves as the 2025-26 home opener for Moorhead. In her 26-year career, Nelson has coached 321 games inside Nemzek Fieldhouse entering Tuesday.

Karla Nelson is in her 26th season as MSUM's head women's basketball coach.
