Dragons Begin New Year with Road Trip to Crookston

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead women's basketball looks to keep their hot streak alive as the New Year dawns. The Dragons travel to take on Minnesota Crookston on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.

Matchup History...The Dragons took care of business in the first meeting with the Golden Eagles on November 25. Terryn Johnson led the Dragons with 18 points while Karlee Fisher scored 11 for Moorhead. MSUM was impressive on defense in the victory, holding the Golden Eagles to 58 points and 38.9 percent shooting for the game. The Dragons held UMC star guard Emma Miller to 19 points on 31.8 percent shooting in the game. The teams have split the last four matchups, but the Dragons have won 12 of the last 15 overall against the Golden Eagles. Moorhead holds an all-time record of 44-10 against the Golden Eagles dating back to the 1996-97 season. The teams first met on December 6, 1996, with Jean Roise's Dragons defeating the Golden Eagles, 96-50. 

Terry Watch....Senior post Terryn Johnson is nearing 900 career points after two solid outings for Moorhead. Johnson scored a career-high 24 points on nine of 11 shooting against Northern State on December 18. The Kindred, N.D., native netted nine points against Jamestown on December 20 to move her career point total to 889. Johnson has also pulled down 670 rebounds in her Dragon career.

Grace Under Pressure...Junior guard Grace Massaquoi has picked up the scoring load for MSUM over the last few weeks. Against Northern State on December 18, Massaquoi scored 13 points before pouring in 17 against Jamestown on December 20. Massaquoi also averaged 4.5 rebounds across those two contests while shooting 50 percent from the floor. Over the last five games, Massaquoi has scored in double figures three times while averaging 12.6 points per game overall.

Kelly In Rhythm...Sophomore wing Caylin Kelly was a huge part of MSUM's 77-76 win over Northern State on December 18. Kelly scored 15 points with six rebounds and two steals in the victory. The Clark, S.D., native shot 66.6 percent from the floor and drilled a pair of vital three-pointers for the Dragons. Kelly has scored in double figures in three of the last five games, averaging nine points per game

Goggle Up...Sophomore point guard Ashton Safranski turned in a eye-popping pair of lines despite dealing with injury. Safranski scored eight points with seven rebounds and four assists against Northern State. The Fargo, N.D., native was electric against Jamestown on December 20, scoring 14 points with seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals. The sophomore suffered an eye injury at UMary on December 13, which forced Safranski to dawn some unorthodox eyewear. Safranski was utilizing protective eyewear from a local hardware store, normally used when cutting lumber.

Dragons Clamp Down...Moorhead continues to be one of the NSIC's top teams in terms of defense. The Dragons hold the fourth-best scoring defense (65.3) in the conference while holding opponents to the third-lowest field goal mark (39.9%). The team also possesses the league's second-best turnover margin at plus-4.64.

Winning With Glass...The Dragons also continue to rank among the NSIC's best in several rebounding categories. MSUM holds the NSIC's third-best rebounding margin (plus-5.7) while pulling down an average of 39.8 boards per game, also third-best in the league. On average, the Dragons bring in 14.1 offensive rebounds per game, the second-best split in the conference.
