MSUM Caps Texas Trip in Decisive Victory

CANYON, Texas – MSU Moorhead softball scored 13 runs to conclude the West Texas Invitational on Sunday morning. The Dragons defeated Eastern New Mexico in six innings, 13-5.

Teagan Clemmons would work out of a jam in the first inning to keep the contest scoreless. The effort transitioned to offense in the home half as Annika Norman earned the first Dragon hit with a single. Eliya Johnson would double in the next at-bat to drive Norman home and provide MSUM a 1-0 lead. Clemmons would again strand a Greyhound in scoring position in the second frame.

It was Clemmons who got the bats going in the next half inning, leading off the frame with a single. Later in the inning, Teagan Pranchke would single, scoring Clemmons from second base. Eastern New Mexico would get a run in the third inning to cut the score in half, 2-1.

The Greyhounds would show their offense in the fourth inning, plating four runs on five hits to take a 5-2 advantage. MSUM would answer as Clemmons got on base again with a hit. The sophomore would later score on a Greyhound error. The Dragons would pull within one run in the fifth inning as Natalie Gonzalez tripled and later scored on a single from Norman,

Later in the fifth, MSUM would have the bases loaded with two outs and Olivia Goderis at the plate. The junior would bring home a run on a fielder's choice to tie the contest at five runs. Johnson would keep the game tied with a solid half inning in the circle. The senior had a strikeout and stranded a runner in scoring position.

Avery Steffen would lead off the bottom of the sixth with a single to provide MSUM a chance at a lead. Steffen would move into scoring position with no outs after stealing second base. In the same at-bat, Gonzalez would triple for the second time, scoring Steffen and putting the Dragons back in front. Norman would then collect her fourth single of the game to drive Gonzalez home.

The Dragons were not done there, however, as they would load the bases with no outs. Clemmons, Jessie Henry, Goderis, Pranchke and Steffen all drove in runs from there in a Dragon onslaught. Steffen moved the Dragons in front, 13-5 after a single, invoking the run rule. Clemmons and Norman combined for eight hits in eight at-bats for the Dragons.
