ST. PAUL, Minn. – MSU Moorhead softball was defeated by Concordia, St. Paul in an NSIC doubleheader on Saturday.
The Golden Bears claimed game one by a 6-5 score before winning game two, 4-1.
Game One
Similar to Friday's first contest, MSUM's offense would start strong in the top of the first inning. With
Jessie Henry walking to leadoff the inning,
Avery Steffen would single before Henry scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning,
Eliya Johnson would single to drive in both Steffen and
Annika Norman to give MSUM a 3-0 lead. The Golden Bears would get a pair back in the home half to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Dragons.
Concordia, St. Paul would set the Dragons down in order in the second and would tie the game at three runs in the bottom half. Although Steffen would double in the third inning, MSUM would not score as the Golden Bears plated two runs to take their first lead, 5-3. MSUM was held without a hit in the fourth inning with Concordia, St. Paul extending their lead to three runs in the home half.
Both teams would be held in check in the fifth and sixth innings outside of a bunt single from
Teagan Pranchke. The Dragons would trail 6-3 heading into the seventh inning and would put together a valiant comeback attempt.
Lexie Wilson led off the frame with a single before
Teagan Clemmons smacked a double, placing runners on second and third. In the ensuing at-bat, freshman
Hailey Thurber drove in both runners on a single. However, Thurber would be called out trying to extend the play on the basepaths.
Pranchke would walk in the next at-bat to bring the go-ahead run to the dish in Henry. Unfortunately for the Dragons, the Golden Bears would force a double play to end the game with a 6-5 win.
Game Two
To begin game two, both starting pitchers would find their groove with
Brynna Farman allowing just one hit through two innings. The junior stranded runners at the corners in the home half of the second inning after a pair of Dragon errors. MSUM would be held hitless in the third inning before the Golden Bears scored three runs on three hits in the bottom half.
Norman would get MSUM's first hit in the fourth inning, but would not advance beyond first base in the frame. MSUM would threaten in the fifth as
Teagan Clemmons and Thurber earned a pair of singles with two outs. Clemmons would score on a Golden Bear error to cut the Dragon deficit to two runs. Concordia, St. Paul would get the run back in the bottom half to lead 4-1.
MSUM would have one final shot in the top of the seventh as
Natalie Gonzalez led off the frame with a single. Later in the inning, Wilson would get into scoring position following a fielder's choice. However, the Dragons would not be able to put together the late run, falling 4-1.
