DULUTH, Minn. – MSU Moorhead picked up its second conference victory of the weekend on Sunday. The Dragons bested St. Cloud State, 4-3.
St. Cloud State would earn the doubles points with wins at the number two and three positions.
Tiannah Gu and
Sophia Felderman would battle hard in the number two spot, narrowly falling 7-5. However, the team of
Luzmary Diaz Castillo and
Shaelyn Johnson would earn a 6-4 victory over Claudia Munoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer. The pairing is now 13-5 overall this season.
Singles play saw Johnson collect her 10
th win of the season, defeating Munoz Perez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Diaz Castillo was on her way to a victory in the number two spot, leading Johana Brower 5-1 in the first set. The junior would go on to win via forfeit, giving MSUM another team point.
Katryna Hansen would collect a gritty win for the Dragons in the number three position. Hansen would drop the first set to Oriana Grott, 6-4. However, the sophomore would look dominant in the remaining two sets, 6-2, 6-0 to claim the match. The Dragons clinched the team victory with another singles win from Gu. The junior defeated Gibby Chapman in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Gu's victory is her 13
th of the season.
