MSUM Takes on Minot State in NSIC Tournament Final

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead men's basketball is set to battle Minot State in the NSIC Tournament final on Tuesday evening. The Dragons and Beavers tipoff at 7 p.m.

Live video and stats will be available at msumdragons.com. Please note that the NSIC Basketball Tournament will be on Midco/Midco Sports Plus with David Brown and Brad Newitt on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on AM 1100/FM 92.3 with Jace Denman and 'Big Game' James McCarty on the call.

Matchup History...The two teams split games during the regular season with Minot State winning back on December 20 (76-52). MSUM got its revenge on February 5 in Minot, defeating the Beavers 85-73. Over the last 10 games MSUM has defeated Minot State eight times. Overall, the Dragons enter the NSIC Tournament final having won 21 of the last 25 meetings with Minot State.

Last Time Out...MSUM used stingy defense and hustle to defeat Winona State in the NSIC Semifinals, 63-47. The 47 points allowed by the Dragons is the second-lowest of the season. Carson Johnson led the Dragons with 23 points while Jacob Jennissen scored 13 points for the Dragons. The Dragons would hold Winona State to a one of 17 clip from three-point range in the win. MSUM also had a plus-16 rebound margin over the Warriors in the victory. 

Dragons On All-NSIC...Junior Logan Kinsey, freshman Carson Johnson and junior Jacob Jennissen were all named to the All-NSIC team on Thursday. Kinsey and Johnson were tabbed as First Team performers while Jennissen was a Second Team honoree. It is the first all-conference honor for all three student-athletes.

More Than Worthy...On Friday, senior guard Jacob Beeninga was awarded the NSIC's Bob Olson Outstanding Senior of the Year Award. The award is presented to a NSIC men's basketball student-athlete who participates at his institution for four years and is academically superior while making a positive contribution to his team and University. "Throughout his time at Minnesota State University Moorhead, Jacob has made everything and everybody around him better. His enthusiasm, attitude, tireless work ethic and infectious personality has positively impacted not only those at MSUM, but the entire Moorhead community. In the classroom, on the court, and in the community Jacob has been the gold standard of what it means to be a student-athlete in the NSIC," said head coach Tim Bergstraser. Beeninga was also honored as the NSIC's Elite 18 Award winner, his fourth consecutive season earning the honor. Beeninga is the first men's basketball student-athlete in conference history to achieve the award four times.

Connecting With History...MSUM's win over Winona State in the NSIC Semifinals marked  the eighth time in program history that the Dragons will play in the NSIC Tournament final. It ties the NSIC record for conference tournament championship appearances. Southwest Minnesota State, Northern State and Minnesota State have all played in eight NSIC Tournament title games.

Bergy At The Pentagon...MSUM head men's basketball coach Tim Bergstraser will embark on his third NSIC Tournament on Sunday. Throughout his short tenure, Bergstraser as already collected 72 career wins and has seen success in Sioux Falls. Bergstraser is 5-1 at the Sanford Pentagon in the NSIC Tournament. With last weekend's win over Minnesota State, MSUM notched its third consecutive 20-win season.  

Regional Rank Revealed...MSUM was slotted fourth in the Central Region in the NCAA's second edition of regional rankings. The Dragons were tabbed as 'under consideration' in the first ideation a week ago. 

Quick Scout...Minot State offers up a physical unit led by All-NSIC First Teamer Caleb van de Griend. The Beaver star had 24 points and 18 rebounds in Minot State's NSIC Semifinal win over Minnesota State.

Tim Bergstraser is in his third season as MSUM's head men's basketball coach.
