ST. CLOUD, Minn. – MSU Moorhead softball senior infielder
Annika Norman would reset the program's all-time hits record in an NSIC twinbill against St. Cloud State on Friday. The Huskies would win game one by a 4-3 score before the Dragons rallied for a 3-2 win in game two.
Game One
It was Norman who would earn the contest's first hit in the top of the first inning for MSUM. Norman entered the game tied for the program record in hits (167) and would promptly claim the record for herself with a single. The senior would eventually move to third base after
Eliya Johnson would double in the next at-bat. However, MSUM would not be able to manage any runs in the inning.
Teagan Clemmons would see a strong beginning to her afternoon in the circle, allowing just three hits, but striking out five Huskies through three innings. Neither team would be able to break the scoreless tie despite the Dragons earning a baserunner in the third inning after a single from
Avery Steffen. MSUM would threaten again in the fourth inning as
Lexie Wilson led off the frame with a hit.
Natalie Gonzalez would double with one out to put two runners in scoring position for MSUM. The Dragons would go on to load the bases, ultimately scoring a run after
Jessie Henry earned a base on balls.
St. Cloud State would respond in the home half, scoring four runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead heading into the fifth. The Huskies would hold the Dragons without a hit across the fifth and sixth innings to retain the three-run advantage.
Teagan Pranchke would begin the seventh inning with a bunt single to provide the Dragons some life. Henry would single in the ensuing at-bat to put two runners on.
Later in the inning. Johnson would knock in two runs following an RBI double, making the score 4-3 with two outs. Wilson would collect a walk in the next at-bat, but St. Cloud State would force a groundout to end the contest, winning 4-3.
Game Two
It was Johnson again who enlivened the Dragons to begin game two, smacking a solo home run in the top of the second. The shot is Johnson's fifth homer of the season and offered MSUM an early 1-0 lead.
Brynna Farman would hold St. Cloud State to just one hit with four strikeouts across the first two innings.
Despite a single from
Lacey Camden to lead off the third inning, MSUM would not be able to extend its lead beyond one run. The Huskies would equalize in the home half, plating a run on two hits. Farman would work out of a bases loaded jam in the frame, capping the inning with a swinging strikeout. It was Farman's effort that translated to offense in the top of the fourth for MSUM. After Norman singled to leadoff the inning, Johnson would drive in her second run of the game after a double. Johnson would move to third before
Mary Schmidt drove the senior home, putting MSUM up 3-1.
Farman would continue to stifle the Huskies into the fifth inning to keep the count at 3-1. Henry, Steffen and Norman would all collect singles in the top half of the fifth, but MSUM would fall victim to a double play. St. Cloud State would get a run back in the home half of the sixth to cut the Dragon lead to one run. Farman would finish the game with seven strikeouts as Steffen looked to secure the save for MSUM.
The senior would see some trouble early in the final inning, surrendering a leadoff double to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. St. Cloud State would move the runner to third base with just one out in the ensuing at-bat. In the next plate appearance, St. Cloud State would attempt a suicide squeeze bunt. However, Steffen would react quickly, earning the out at home, but MSUM was not done there. Pranchke would fire the ball to first base, catching the Husky baserunner in a rundown. The play resulted in two outs for the Dragons as Steffen would earn the save.
