Dragons Fight, but Fall to Top Seed Augie in NSIC Second Round

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Top-seeded Augustana Vikings built a lead off back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the 10th-seeded Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons post season in the NSIC Tournament Second Round.

Brynna Farman would be in the circle to start for the Dragons, giving up one run in the first off a Lexi Lander single, bringing home Andrea Cain.

Augie would start NSIC Pitcher of the Year, Grace Glazer, who held the Dragons scoreless until the fourth when a Lexie Wilson double to right center would allow Annika Norman to score the first run for MSUM (1-1).

Teagan Clemmons moved in to pitch in the fourth after Farman's 3.2 innings pitched, giving up four hits and one earned run.

The 1-1 tie would not last long as the Vikings would strike again in the 5th.  A left field double from Cain sent Liz Dierks home from second base, regaining a 2-1 lead over the Dragons.

Augie would open the game up in the sixth after RBI single from Sidney Smart and a three-run homer from Cain.  Avery Steffen would take over pitching duties at that point, but gave up a solo home run to the first batter, Desi Cuevas, lifting the Vikings to a 7-1 lead.

Lander took over for the Vikings at pitcher in the top of the seventh.  A Wilson hit would put pinch-runner Chloe Christie on second to start the inning.  Natalie Gonzalez would earn a walk on the following at-bat...and then the rain came.  Play would resume after an approximately 30min downpour.  Clemmons would reach first unearned on a throwing error, scoring Christie and advancing Gonzalez to third (7-2).  Lander would strike out three consecutive Dragons swinging to finish the game in favor of the Vikings, ending the post-season for MSUM.

"Very proud of  how the team played, we made a great run at the end of the month," said head coach Vanessa Kellems.  "It speaks volumes about their capabilities, their hard work, and resiliency.  To fight like that against a team like Augie the way they did should make everyone (myself included) very proud."
