Moorhead On the Road for Inter-Division Clashes with SMSU, USF

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead women's basketball will take to the road again this weekend in a pair of NSIC inter-division matchups. The Dragons take on Southwest Minnesota State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. before matching up with Sioux Falls on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Matchup History...The Dragons will look to snap a two-game skid to the Mustangs on Friday. In total, Southwest Minnesota State has won six of the last seven meetings with MSUM. The Mustangs ended Moorhead's season in 2024-25, defeating the Dragons 87-79 in the NSIC Tournament quarterfinals. Prior to the last seven matchups, MSUM held a nine-game win streak over the Mustangs from January 2013 until February 2020. All-time, the programs have been incredibly even with MSUM winning 44 games to SMSU's 46. The two teams first met during the 1973-74 season with the Mustangs defeating Judy Bowers' Dragons, 50-37. MSUM will also look to snap a two-game skid to the Coo on Saturday. Overall, Sioux Falls has captured six of the last eight games over the Dragons dating back to 2017-18 season. Since the Coo joined the NSIC, they hold a 9-7 all-time record against the Dragons. 

Terry Watch...Senior post Terryn Johnson continued her quest for 1,000 career points last weekend. Johnson scored a total of 24 points, including 16 against Augustana last Friday. Against the Vikings, Johnson posted her 24th career double-double, adding 12 rebounds to her 16 points. Johnson also pulled down her 700th career rebound against Augie. The Kindred, N.D., native has scored 952 career points entering this weekend of competition. 

All-Ashton...Sophomore guard Ashton Safranski was named the NSIC North Division Player of the Week after averaging 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and 3.5 steals across two games for Moorhead. Safranski scored 17 points against Augustana on Friday, adding seven assists, six steals and four rebounds in the victory. The Fargo, N.D., native scored 13 points with six rebounds, three assists and a steal against Wayne State on Saturday. Currently, Safranski is third in the NSIC with 39 steals this season. In just 46 career games, Safranski has totaled 126 steals, which ties Natalie Jens for the 11th-most in program history. 

Full-Tilt Berge...Junior forward Abby Berge returned to form at home for the Dragons last weekend. Berge was critical in the 74-61 win over Augustana on Friday, scoring a game-high 22 points while also pulling down eight rebounds. The Sunburg, Minn., native connected on 70 percent of her shot attempts in the win while also knocking down seven foul shots. Berge scored eight points with five rebounds against Wayne State on Saturday. 

Best In Glass...Moorhead enters this weekend as the NSIC's top rebounding collective, averaging 40.3 boards a game. The Dragons are also second in the conference in offensive rebounds per game, pulling down 14.1 a contest. MSUM's plus-6.4 margin on the glass is the second-best in the Northern Sun as well. The Dragons are in the top 20 percent nationally in both rebounding margin (41st) and rebounds per game (58th).

Dragons Know Turnovers...Moorhead was able to force 30 total turnovers across two games last weekend. The effort on defense moved MSUM's turnover ratio to plus-3.06, the second-best in the NSIC. The Dragons are in the top 22 percent nationally in turnover ratio (t65th).
