MARSHALL, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead men's basketball fell victim to a late basket from Southwest Minnesota State in NSIC action on Friday night. The Mustangs scored with two seconds to play in regulation to claim a 71-69 victory.
How It Happened
- The Dragons would look to push the pace early and establish their style of play, leading by four points after a jam from Adam Jenkins.
- Near the midway point of the first half, Moorhead would strike on an 8-0 run, led by Dominic Gooden.
- Gooden cashed two three-pointers while Kabine Kaba added a basket to put the Dragons up nine points.
- The nine-point advantage (26-17) was the largest lead by either team in the game.
- Late in the half, Gooden would strike again from deep to have Moorhead up six points.
- Southwest Minnesota State would connect on a pair of threes thereafter to tie the score at 34 points at halftime.
- Gooden led the MSUM with nine points while the Dragons shot 40 percent from the floor.
- A three-pointer from Rodrick Payne gave the Dragons a lead once more early in the second half.
- The Mustang offense would find a rhythm, building a lead of seven points (53-46) midway through the second half.
- Isa El-Amin would take over from there, connecting on four straight three-pointers to eventually tie the game at 58 points with over eight minutes to play.
- The teams would trade leads from there with Sam Hondl keeping the Dragons within one point (67-66) with a minute to go.
- Southwest Minnesota State would score on the ensuing possession to create a three-point lead.
- It was El-Amin who again made the clutch shot for Moorhead, burying a triple to tie the game at 69 points with 11 seconds to play.
- Out of a Mustang timeout, SMSU star guard Jakob Braaten would drive to the lane and score with two seconds to play.
- With the Mustangs leading 71-69, MSUM could not get an attempt off before time expired.
