Massive Home Weekend Awaits Dragons

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead women's basketball is set to host a pair of high-stakes NSIC contests this weekend. The Dragons meet up with St. Cloud State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting second-ranked Minnesota State as a part of Noize Night on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Live video and stats will be available at msumdragons.com. Fans can watch the contests on the Dragon Digital Network with Steve d'Eustachio on play-by-play and Jared Bledsoe on commentary. Saturday's game can also be listened to on AM 1100/FM 92.3 with Jace Denman and 'Big Game' James McCarty on the call.

Moorhead enters the weekend riding a four-game winning streak over the Huskies dating back to February 2023. MSUM defeated the Huskies 78-66 in their last meeting with the contest needing overtime. The Dragons had four players in double figures in the victory, including Ashton Safranski, Abby Berge and Terryn Johnson. Over the last 28 meetings between the Dragons and Huskies, MSUM has claimed 17 of them. In total, the Huskies lead the all-time series 37-32. The Dragons and Huskies first met during the 1971-72 season as Dee Watson's Dragons fell to St. Cloud State, 43-40. The 1971-72 season was just the fifth season Moorhead fielded a women's basketball team. Against the Mavericks, Moorhead will look to create a win streak following MSUM's 74-69 victory in last season's regular season finale. The win over Minnesota State was Moorhead's first since January 28, 2022. In total, the Mavericks hold a 31-19 series lead. The Dragons won the first-ever meeting during the 1976-77 season, 75-54.

Terry Watch...The countdown is on for Moorhead senior forward Terryn Johnson, who scored 29 points over two games last weekend. Johnson currently sits at 981 career points, sitting 19 points from becoming the 27th player in MSUM history to eclipse 1,000 for a career. The senior has been a model of efficiency throughout her career, holding a 52.9 percent field goal clip. Johnson pulled down her 724th career rebound last weekend as well, which puts her 54 rebounds shy of entering the top ten in program history. The Kindred, N.D., native secured her 25th career double-double against Sioux Falls, scoring 18 points with 15 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds.

Berge's Bag...Junior forward Abby Berge turned in another strong week of contests for MSUM. Berge averaged 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds a game, led by an 18-point, six-rebound showing against Sioux Falls. The Sunburg, Minn., native shot 43.7 percent from the floor for the game. Since returning from injury on January 3, Berge is averaging 9.7 points per game.

An Ashton Update...Sophomore point guard Ashton Safranski filled up the box score again last weekend for the Dragons. Against Southwest Minnesota State, Safranski scored 10 points and nearly missed a double-double, snaring nine rebounds. Safranski also had five assists and three steals against the Mustangs. The Fargo, N.D., native dished out four more assists against Sioux Falls on Saturday. Safranski currently leads the Dragons in assists (87) and steals (43) with her steal total being the third-best in the Northern Sun.

Snatching Them Down...Moorhead had another hearty week in the rebounding category against Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State. The Dragons came out of the two games with a plus-19 advantage on the glass, including a plus-20 margin against the Cougars. Moorhead holds the NSIC's second-best rebounding margin mark, holding a plus-6.8 advantage.

Trio Of Legends...This weekend's matchups will feature three of the winningest (and longest-tenured) coaches in the Northern Sun in Karla Nelson, Lori Fish and Emilee Thiesse. Between the three, they have won a total of 1,055 games in 58 combined seasons of coaching at their respective institutions.

Karla Nelson is in her 26th season as MSUM's head women's basketball coach.
