toppling 13th-ranked Minnesota Duluth 23-20 in overtime.
Matchup History...The Dragons will look to extend to their long win streak over the Beavers on Saturday. Moorhead has claimed the last 12 meetings with Minot State, dating back to the 2013 season. The Beavers last defeated the Dragons on October 27, 2012 in Moorhead, 31-10. The all-time series is also led by MSUM, who bolsters a 16-4 mark against the Beavers since the program's first met in 1930. The Dragons would win the inaugural matchup between the two schools on October 25, 1930. On that day, Alex Nemzek's squad would defeat the Beavers, 45-0. Prior to Minot State joining the NSIC in 2012, the squads had not met up since September 4, 1976, a 28-14 Dragon victory. In last season's meeting, a furious Minot State comeback fell victim to an overtime touchdown pass from
Jack Strand to
Brady Perryman. The Dragons defeated the Beavers 40-37.
Another One...Moorhead collected its fourth NCAA Division II ranked victory in three seasons on Saturday versus #13 Minnesota Duluth. The win was the first over the Bulldogs inside Alex Nemzek Stadium since October 15, 1994, a 17-7 Dragon win. UMD's number 13 ranking was also the highest an opponent has been ranked entering a contest where MSUM emerged victorious.
Just A Little Pitch And Catch...MSUM would secure a 23-20 overtime win over the Bulldogs thanks to heroics from
Drew Huebner and
Kelly Johnson.
After a pair of short runs, MSUM would be faced with a third and eight from the 23-yard line. Huebner would get a clean pocket as he searched for receivers downfield. The sophomore looked right and fired a divine sideline throw while a sprinting Johnson dashed up field. The senior Johnson had to fully extend his body, laying out for the near-perfect throw from Huebner.
Reign Man...Sophomore linebacker
Reign Battle has proven to be one of the most disruptive defenders in the Northern Sun so far this season. That storyline would continue for Battle against Minnesota Duluth. The Moorhead product forced a fumble on the first offensive possession for the Bulldogs. Battle's forced fumble was then picked up by safety
Micah Runion, who dashed 58 yards for a touchdown. So far this season, Battle has made 23 total tackles, including three tackles for loss. Battle laso has a pair of sacks to go along with a pass breakup.
Ulmer Mode...Sophomore
Tristan Ulmer had another strong showing against Minnesota Duluth last Saturday. Ulmer logged four punts, totaling 171 yards for a 42.7 yards per punt average. The Mandan, N.D., native had a long punt of 51 yards. Ulmer was also able to pin the Bulldogs inside their own 20-yard line three times on Saturday.
Catching Kalen...Sophomore wide receiver
Kalen Lucas continues to emerge as MSUM's go-to possession player in 2026. Lucas made 10 catches for 99 yards against Minnesota Duluth on Saturday. So far this season, Lucas leads the Dragons with 34 total receptions, a mark that is third in the NSIC.
Quick Scout...Do not let the record fool you, Minot State has been as competitive a team as any in the NSIC this season. The Beaver triple option attack has been led by Brandon Hines Jr., who has rushed for 686 yards and eight touchdowns so far this season. Quarterback Jett Lundeen is second on the team in rushing (274).
Steve Laqua is in his 16th season as MSUM's head football coach.
