MANSFIELD, Texas – Minnesota State Moorhead softball concluded play at the Lone Star D2 College Classic on Sunday. The Dragons fell to Colorado School of Mines to open the morning before wrapping the tournament in a loss to Maryville.
Orediggers 8, Dragons 3
Colorado School of Mines would blank Moorhead in the top of the first inning and would respond by scoring a pair of runs in the home half. The Dragons would provide an answer in the second frame as
Lacey Camden led off the inning with a single. Camden would be thrown out attempting to steal, but Moorhead would gather two more baserunners off a hit from
Riley Dunne and a
Melanie Spivey walk. In the ensuing at-bat, freshman
Loie Moore would showcase her power, sending a ball over the left field fence. Moore's three-run homer put the Dragons in front, 3-2.
The Orediggers would quickly tie the game in the home half behind a solo home run. After Colorado School of Mines held the Dragons scoreless in the third inning, the Orediggers would take a 4-3 lead in the bottom half. Colorado School of Mines would add another run in the bottom of the fourth to create a two-run lead. The Orediggers would add two more in the fifth inning to lead 7-3.
Moore would grab her second hit of the game as the Dragons looked for a comeback in the seventh inning. However, Colorado School of Mines would get out of the inning without surrendering a run. The Orediggers claimed the contest, 8-3.
Saints 12, Dragons 4
Moorhead would quickly get two runners on in the first inning as Moore singled to leadoff the game.
Sami Macchiaroli would reach on a fielder's choice, eventually moving to third base after a single from
Courtney Locke. With both runners in scoring position, MSUM would fall victim to a rare 4-2-5 double play to end the frame. While Maryville would score a run in the home half, Moorhead would strand two Saints thanks to their own inning-ending double play.
The Saints would not waste another opportunity in the second inning, scoring five runs on four hits to lead by six. Moorhead would swing back in the top of the third inning as
Teagan Pranchke earned a one-out single. After Moore walked, it was Macchiaroli who provided the timely hit. The freshman would single to drive in both runners, cutting the Dragon deficit to four runs.
Lexie Wilson would single in Macchiaroli before the end of the inning to cut the Maryville lead in half.
Maryville would score a run in the home half before holding MSUM without a run in the fourth. The Saints broke the game open in the bottom half, scoring four runs on four hits to lead 11-3. In the fifth, Locke and Wilson would single before
Kayla Roidt drove in a run on an RBI double. One run was all MSUM could muster as the Saints scored again in the home half to secure a 12-4 run rule victory.
