Dragons Back to Division Play on the Road

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead women's basketball returns to NSIC North Division action in a pair of road contests. The Dragons take on Jamestown on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before traveling to Northern State for a 4 p.m. matchup on Saturday.

Live video and stats will be available at msumdragons.com. Saturday's game can also be listened to on AM 1100/FM 92.3 with Jace Denman and 'Big Game' James McCarty on the call.

Matchup History...The Dragons and Jimmies met back on December 20 with Moorhead securing an impressive 76-49 victory. Grace Massaquoi led the Dragons with 17 points while Karlee Fisher, Ashton Safranski and Aubrey Morrison scored in double figures. The meeting with Jamestown was the first between the two schools since November 27, 2007. Oddly enough, on that day, the Dragons defeated the Jimmies by the exact scoreline of 76-49. The two teams first met during the 1984-85 season. MSUM is 13-9 all-time against Jamestown entering Thursday. The Dragons also claimed the early-season matchup with Northern State, defeating the Wolves 77-76 on December 18. Terryn Johnson led the Dragons with 24 points in the victory. The Dragons and Wolves have traded wins back and forth over the last eight meetings between them. The Wolves still hold the all-time series advantage, having won 53 games to MSUM's 36.

Watch Terry...Senior forward Terryn Johnson eclipsed the 1,000 point milestone last Friday against St. Cloud State. Johnson was superb against the Huskies, scoring 23 points with 11 rebounds for her 26th career double-double. The Kindred, N.D., native is the 27th player in Moorhead basketball history to accrue 1,000 or more points in a career. Johnson led the NSIC in field goal percentage last weekend, shooting 85 percent from the floor. For her efforts, Johnson was named to the NSIC 'Shining Five'.

It Was Only A Matter Of Time...Sophomore guard Ashton Safranski also turned in a stirring effort against the Huskies on Friday. Safranski logged a triple-double of 13 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds while also tallying three steals. The effort from Safranski marks the first-ever recorded triple-double in Moorhead women's basketball history. Safranski is the first player to rack up a triple-double in NSIC play since 2017 when Concordia St. Paul's Mishayla Jones had 15 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists in a 88-75 home victory over St. Cloud State.

Leading The Way On The Glass...Moorhead came out of last weekend's contests holding a plus-11 advantage on the glass. MSUM holds the second-best rebounding margin in the NSIC, averaging 6.7 more rebounds per game compared to opponents. Winona State leads that statistical category with a plus-7.7 margin. The Dragons are also third in the conference in total rebounds per game (39.7) and offensive rebounds per game (13.5).

Kelly Stepping In...Sophomore wing Caylin Kelly provided a necessary jolt for the Dragons last weekend. After scoring eight points on 50 percent shooting against St. Cloud State, Kelly netted 10 points against second-ranked Minnesota State on Saturday. The effort is Kelly's ninth performance with 10 or more points. So far this season, Kelly is averaging just under 10 points per game (9.3) for MSUM.

Adie's Groove...Junior sharpshooter Adie Wagner showcased her prowess for the longball against second-ranked Minnesota State. Wagner scored eight points against the Mavericks, including two three-pointers in the first half. The makes from Wagner enlivened the Nemzek Fieldhouse crowd and cut into an early Maverick lead.

Karla Nelson is in her 26th season as MSUM's head women's basketball coach.
