Dragons Look Towards NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead swimming & diving looks towards the NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships which kick off this week. Preliminary sessions begin at 10 a.m. starting Wednesday with finals beginning at 5 p.m. The meet runs through Saturday at Hulbert Aquatic Center in West Fargo, N.D.

Live video and results will be available at msumdragons.com. Moorhead last competed on January 31 in a dual loss to 16th-ranked Minnesota State. 

Dragons At The Conference Meet...Moorhead saw an improved finish at last season's conference meet, finishing sixth as a team with 327 points. This comes after the Dragons placed ninth in 2023-24. Fernanda Leon was an All-NSIC performer for the Dragons a season ago in the 400-yard IM. In total, MSUM bolsters 28 All-NSIC performances since 2013. 

Leon Captures Victory...Against Minnesota State on January 31, Leon paced the Dragons in multiple events. The sophomore would collect an event victory in the 200-yard IM, swimming a 2:16.42. Leon also would begin her afternoon with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard fly, swimming a 2:11.80. The Lima, Peru, native also placed third in the 100-yard fly, swimming a 1:00.63.

Diving Update...Against the Mavericks in 1-meter diving, Isabelle Johnson would finish third overall with a score of 246.70 as Zoe Bjerke finished behind Johnson with a count of 243.40. Johnson would place runner-up in 3-meter competition, tallying a score of 253.15. Bjerke placed third behind a score of 249.90. Bjerks has qualified for the NCAA Diving Championships already this season. 

Relays Gaining Steam...On January 31, the 200-yard medley relay would begin the meet as the Dragon team of Kelsey Jackson, Rose Urick, Ruth Pavelski and Sophia Verke would place fourth behind a time of 1:51.67. To conclude the meet, MSUM's 200-yard freestyle team of Maggie Moore, Tresa Baumgard, Ruth Pavelski and Verke would place third with a mark of 1:42.79. 

Urick's Strong Meet....The sophomore Urick turned in some strong swims against Minnesota State on January 31. Urick would be Moorhead's top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking a 1:10.23 for a fifth-place finish. Urick also led the Dragons in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing runner-up at 2:33.95. The Monticello, Minn., native set two top ten times at last season's NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships. 

Charlie King is in his eighth season as MSUM's head swimming & diving coach. 

Meet Info

The NSIC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships will take place February 11-14 at the Hulbert Aquatic Center in West Fargo, North Dakota.  Swimming prelims will take place each day at 10 a.m. and finals at 5:00 p.m. Diving will take place on Thursday and Saturday with prelims at 10 a.m., the B-final taking place 30 minutes after prelims conclude, and the A-final during the evening events.

Concessions
Concessions will be available for all evening sessions during the championship. Vending machines will be available for all sessions during the championship. The Hulbert Aquatic Center allows outside food & drink. No glass containers or red colored drinks are allowed in the Hulbert Aquatic Center.

NSIC All-Conference Performers All-Conference performers shall consist of the top three place finishers in each event and the members of the top two relay teams. The swimmer scoring the most points will be named Swimmer of the Meet. The diver scoring the most points will be named Diver of the Meet.   The team scoring the most points will be named conference champion.
