Dragons Edged Out by Bearcats

BOLIVER, Mo.  – Minnesota State Moorhead softball continued its effort across Missouri on Monday evening. The Dragons dropped a doubleheader with Southwest Baptist.

Game One

Moorhead would get two runners on to begin the contest as Lexie Wilson led the way with a single. Despite the threat, MSUM would not push anything across. Southwest Baptist would be held scoreless in the first but would push across a run in the bottom of the second. The Dragons would go on to load the bases in the top of the third with singles from Sami Macchiaroli, Loie Moore and Wilson. However, Moorhead would be held off the scoreboard after an inning-ending double play.

The Bearcats would bring across two more runs in the home half while holding the Dragons without a run in the fourth. MSUM would come to life in the fifth inning after loading the bases with one out. Moore would score on a wild pitch before Kayla Roidt singled to drive home Courtney Locke. With Wilson on third, Moorhead would employ a double steal with the senior crossing home to even the score at three runs.

Southwest Baptist would take the lead back in the bottom half, leading 4-3. Moorhead would answer back in the sixth after back-to-back singles from Alivia Henderson and Teagan Pranchke. Henderson would later score to tie the game. The Bearcats would bring around two runs in the sixth frame to regain the lead, 6-4.

In the final half inning, Moorhead would have one final rally. The Dragons would load the bases with no outs thanks to hits from Moore and Locke. Roidt would drive in Moore on a sacrifice fly to bring MSUM to within a run with just one out. However, Southwest Baptist would earn a timely double play to end the contest in their favor, 6-5. Moore, Locke, Henderson and Wilson all logged multi-hit showings for Moorhead. Teagan Clemmons struck out seven Bearcats in the loss.

Game Two

After the Dragons stranded two on base in the top of the first, Southwest Baptist would score two runs on a home run. Lacey Camden would answer the power in the second frame, connecting on a one-out solo shot to cut MSUM's deficit in half. The Bearcats would only continue to showcase power at the plate, hitting a solo home run in the home half to lead 3-1. A two-run shot in the third inning stretched Southwest Baptist's lead to four runs.

The Bearcats would score another before the inning concluded to make the score 6-1. Camden would earn her second hit of the game in the ensuing half inning on a double, but MSUM would not push anything across. Moorhead would successfully cut into the deficit in the fifth inning, utilizing a leadoff walk from Pranchke. Locke would double later in the frame to drive Pranchke home. Wilson would score Locke with a double of her own in the next at-bat. Heading into the home half, Southwest Baptist's lead was again cut in half, 6-3.

MSUM would threaten again in the sixth frame as Camden earned a leadoff walk. Camden and Pranchke would move into scoring position on a Bearcat error a few at-bats later. However, Southwest Baptist would get out of the jam unscathed with their 6-3 lead still intact. Locke would double to lead off the seventh, later scoring on another Bearcat error to make the score 6-4. Southwest Baptist would quickly shut out any potential rally, winning 6-4.
