The most successful women’s collegiate basketball coach in the history of the state on North Dakota, Coach Amy Ruley was the architect of a program that is known nationally for its success. An outstanding teacher, coach, speaker and community leader Ruley has made an impact at North Dakota State University, in the Fargo Moorhead community and the Red River Valley.

She was recognized by the NCAA as the Most Outstanding DII Women’s Coach in the 25 year history of the NCAA Championships. In addition, her team was recognized as one of the top 25 “Defining Moments” in the 100 year history of the NCAA with their four consecutive National Championships. Included in that stretch was a perfect  32-0 record in the 1995 season and a 49 game winning streak, one of longest in NCAA history.

She compiled an impressive 671-198 record as a coach. In a 14 year span from 1986-2000 her teams competed in 9 final four appearances with 3 second place finishes and 1 third place finishes in addition to the 5 National Championships. As NDSU made the transition from DII to DI status Ruley guided the team through the transition with a winning record and finish second in the Summit League in their first year of membership!

Ruley has received numerous recognitions throughout her career with 6 Hall of Fame inductions including the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tennessee in 2004. She is also an eight year cancer survivor and when asked shares her experience with others.  She has served on numerous committees at the national level with the NCAA, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and with USA basketball. She has also served locally as a member of various organizations, most currently with the United Blood Services Leadership Team and the United Way.

Ruley is currently serving as an Associate Athletic Director at North Dakota State University. Her responsibilities include donor development and solicitation as well as public relations for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. When not working she enjoys time with her two standard poodles Alex and Rue and with family and friends on Cormorant Lake in Minnesota.  In addition, she has recently taken up the game of golf.
