Tim Bergstraser enters his third season as head men's basketball coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2024-25. He was named to the post in May 2022.
MSUM finished the 2023-24 season with a 25-6 overall record and an 18-6 mark in NSIC competition. The Dragons had All-NSIC performers in Jacob Beeninga (First Team), JaMir Price (First Team), Ja'Kair Sanchez (Second Team) and Dane Zimmer (Second Team). Price was named the NSIC's Newcomer of the Year as well. Beeninga was also named an NABC All-Central District Second Team selection under Bergstraser's tutelage. The Dragons made their second straight appearance in the NCAA Central Region Tournament under Bergstraser in 2023-24.Â
In his second season, Bergstraser only upped the profile of MSU Moorhead men's basketball, helping the program's to its first number one ranking in the NABC Coaches' Poll on January 9, 2024. The Dragons spent the entire season ranked within the top 13 in the country in the NABC Poll. Bergstraser became the fastest coach in program history to 50 wins in MSUM's NCAA Central Region Tournament victory over Pittsburg State on March 16. The win over the Gorillas was also his first NCAA Tournament victory.Â
Bergstraser only saw continued success in his first season at the helm of Dragon men's basketball. MSUM went 25-7 in 2022-23, including a 17-5 mark in NSIC competition. The Dragons secured their second consecutive NSIC Tournament championship with a resounding win over Minnesota Duluth in the tournament title game. MSUM would go on to compete at the NCAA Central Region Tournament in Maryville, Mo. MSUM had three all-conference performers during the year in Gavin Baumgartner, Lorenzo McGhee and Jacob Beeninga.Â
In 2021-22, he completed his fourth season as the top assistant coach for Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball in 2021-22. He has been involved in all aspects of the Dragon program, including recruiting and scouting.
The St. Cloud native has helped the Dragons to two straight NCAA tournament appearances (2020-21 and 2021-22) and to the Dragons' first-ever NSIC tournament championship in March 2022. Â
Bergstraser is no stranger to MSUM men's basketball, having served as a graduate assistant from 2015-17. During his time at MSUM,, the Dragons went 54-12, won two division championships and an overall conference championship in 2016-2017.  The Dragons also went to two consecutive NCAA tournaments with Bergstraser on staff. For his efforts, Bergstraser received the NABC Under Armour 30-Under-30 award. He spent the 2017-18 season as an assistant coach at Quincy (Ill.)
During the 2014-2015 season, Bergstraser served as an assistant coach the the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
In his playing career, Bergstraser attended St. Cloud State.  As a Huskie, Bergstraser made a trip the the NCAA Final Four in the 2009-2010 season.  Bergstraser was an all conference performer in 2011-2012, averaging 12.8 points per game and grabbing 7.5 rebounds per game.  His career was cut short due to three ACL knee surgeries.
