MOORHEAD, Minn. - Goals by freshman
Ashley Gallegos and
Jordyn Wallenborn gave the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons a 2-1 win over the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on Sunday in both teams' final regular season game.
After a scoreless first half of conference action, Gallegos put the Dragons up 1-0 just 2:08 into the second half on a pass in front of the net by Wallenborn.
The Mustangs tied the game with 10:01 left in regulation on a penalty kick by Tatum Borstad. It was the only shot-on-goal that Dragons goalkeeper
Alison Wanner let by her, as she saved four in 90 minutes played.
After a Southwest corner kick and two shots off target, the Dragons defenders passed the ball out of their zone and to the feet of their forwards. Myrthe van Wingaarde, who recently subbed into the game, knocked a ball high into the zone that Wallenborn played off her own body and kicked past the Mustang's goalkeeper to score the game-winning goal. It was her 13th goal of the season.
The Dragons end the regular season with a 7-10-1 overall record and a 4-9-0 record in league play.
