Seniors Lead Dragons To Eight Straight Wins

| By:
MOORHEAD, MINN. – Seniors Meghan Rettke and Alison Nash-Gerlach both registered their second straight double-doubles to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons to their eighth straight win, topping St. Cloud State University Huskies Friday night 74-62.

The Dragons began their NSIC home stand after claiming two NSIC victories on the road. The Dragons moved to 8-0 and showed why they remain unbeaten.

Nash-Gerlach was once again a big force on the court that proved too much for the Huskies to handle. After registering only seven points in the first half, Nash-Gerlach went six for eight from the field and was perfect from the line in the second half. She was also dominant on both ends of the floor picking up six rebounds on both offense and defense. She ended the night with 24 points and grabbed 12 boards.

Rettke was a part of the dynamic duo, scoring 18 points while cleaning up the defensive boards with 13, on her way to 16 on the night. Rettke was held to only six points and six rebounds but sparked the Dragons in the second half.

The Dragons jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead, the Huskies rallied back with a quick paced offense. With the lead shrinking down to just one, freshman Marisa Yernatich made two quick three-point shots to regain control. The Dragon defense locked down as halftime drew near, forcing five missed shots and a pair of turnovers. Down 11, the Huskies made one final push and closed to with in four at the break, 37-33.

The Huskies struggled out of the gate in the second half, shooting one for eight from the field. Nash-Gerlach and Rettke tried to rally their team, taking most of the shots and forced fouls putting the Huskies against the ropes. After freshman Maggie Evenson hit a three-point shot, Nash-Gerlach and Rettke went to work on the boards, getting a handle on six straight rebounds.

With two minutes to go the Dragons found themselves up by 10, and after a minute passed by the Huskies only came with in nine points but would not get any closer as foul trouble and clutch free throw shooting aided the Dragons to their third straight NSIC win.

Sophomore Angie Jetvig continued to aid the Dragons as she tallied 13 points and had four rebounds. Brittany Mayclin contributed seven points.

The loss drops the Huskies to 3-5 on the season (1-2 NSIC). The Dragons who lead the NSIC in points with 632 will host the Concordia St. Paul Golden Bears in a match-up of unbeaten teams Saturday at 6 pm at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
