MOORHEAD, MINN. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons took on the Golden Bears of Concordia St. Paul in a matchup of the top two teams in the NSIC. Despite a late surge, the Golden Bears held on to defeat the Dragons Saturday night, 77-65.
The Dragons came into the game hoping to sweep their first NSIC home stand and remain unbeaten. The Golden Bears also came into the game without a loss, making this the biggest test for both teams so far.
The Dragons were lead by sophomore
Angie Jetvig who was the only player in the game from either team to post a double-double. Jetvig finished with 18 points on the night, 12 of those coming in the first half. Jetvig was the only player in double figures after the first half. She also was the game leader with 12 rebounds on the night.
There was also help from senior
Alison Nash-Gerlach who continues to put up big numbers finishing with 17 points on the night. Nash-Gerlach did well from inside the paint, grabbing seven rebounds on the night. She was also perfect from the free throw line, hitting all six shots from the charity stripe.
The Golden Bears were lead by guard Jineen Williams and center Gillian Bjerke, both putting up 17 points. The Golden Bears capitalized on Dragon turnovers and also shot 53 percent from the field in the second half.
The Golden Bears started out to an 8-0 lead but the Dragons came back and tied the game at 10-10 in under two minutes. The biggest lead for the Golden Bears was 15 but once again the Dragons found a way to climb back and pulled with in seven as the half ended. The Golden Bears led 37-30.
The second half feature much more clean basketball for the Dragons as turnover numbers went down and the shooting percentage was on the rise, going from 36 percent in the first half to 44 percent in the second. But the Golden Bears also improved their shooting and time was not on the Dragon's side. The Dragons fell to the Golden Bears but do remain in a three-way tie for second place in the NSIC standings.
The Dragons as they stand at 8-1 (3-1 NSIC). The win gives the Golden Bears an 8-0 mark on the season (4-0 NSIC). The Dragons will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the Cruizin Classic. They will face off against Barry University next Friday at 7 pm CST.
