BEMIDJI, Minn. - Senior
Jerome Nelson hit a three-pointer with one minute left in the game to put the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team up two points over the Bemidji State Beavers to carry the Dragons to a 73-71 win, in both team's NSIC opener. The Dragons move their overall record to 3-3, as they are 1-0 in conference play.
The Beavers led by as much as six points in the first half of the game, as Patrick Cassidy led BSU with 11 points before intermission. They led by six with seven minutes left before half, but the Dragons chipped away tying the contest at 32 with 3:31 left in the half. The lead changed hands two more times before
Andrew VanHavermaet posted a layup as the time ran out to put the Dragons up two at the break.
The game was tied for the 11th time with 1:28 left to play in the second half, each team at 70 points, and a Beaver at the free-throw line. Seth Haake made his second of two free-throws to give the Beavers a one point lead with 1:10 left to play.
In the Dragons next possession
Jake Driscoll hit a wide open Nelson behind the arc, where he drained a three to give MSUM a two point lead.
The ball changed possessions two more times before the Beavers regained the ball with 10 seconds left in the game, as Bryce Tesdahl drove the lane and was blocked by
Alex Novak, who grabbed the ball and held on to the Dragons victory.
Jake Driscoll and
Andrew VanHavermaet each scored 14 points to lead the Dragons over the Beavers.
Xavier Reed also contributed 13 points while Nelson ended the night with 11.
Freshman
Alex Novak grabbed a career high 15 rebounds. He also scored 8 points in the game.
