Dragons Suffer First Loss in NSIC to Warriors, 2-0

WINONA, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Dragons suffered their second loss of the season on Sunday as the reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champions, the Winona State Warriors, tallied two goals, both in the first half, to take the victory.

The Warriors are currently 2-0 in league play and are 5-3-0 overall. The Dragons record moves to 1-1 in the NSIC and have an overall record of 4-2-1.

WSU hit their first goal 10:46 into the game as Lauren Sturdivant completed the passing train from Kendal Strassle and Amanda Dennis to give the home team the game-winning goal.

Karen Schappert added the insurance goal at 27:52, the passes coming from Sarah Colleran and Sturdivant.

MSUM's goalkeeper Alison Wanner made eight saves in 90 minutes played, as the Warriors outshot the Dragons 21-5. The Dragon's defense bunkered down in the second half as they cut the Warriors first period shots in half, going form 14 to seven.

The Red and White will host the conference leading University of Minnesota-Duluth on Friday at 4 p.m. for the team's first game of homecoming weekend. The Dragons will host a youth soccer day on Sunday at 1 p.m. as they will play against Bemidji State.
