Nash-Gerlach flirted with MSUM points record, achieves free-throw record.
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons womens basketball team took on the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles in an NSIC showdown at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. The Dragons received a monster game from forward
Alison Nash-Gerlach as the senior broke one school record and flirted with another, leading the Dragons to a come from behind win over the Golden Eagles 81-76.
The Golden Eagles broke out early, leading by as much as 13 to begin the first half. The team was lead by junior forward Gina Jaroszewski early on as she scored 10 points in the first half. Nash-Gerlach took control, hitting all four free-throw shots and getting second chance points as halftime approached, the Dragons found themselves within seven points of the Golden Eagles, 35-28.
As the second half began the Golden Eagles extended the lead to 10 points on three occasions, but the Dragons kept coming back as freshman guard Kaycee Charatte hit four consecutive free throw attempts and a three-pointer, tying the game at 44-44. Sophomore
Angie Jetvig hit a jump shot with 8:29 left in the second half, giving the Dragons their first lead of the game, 54-53.
The lead would switch hands five more times but a jumper by Nash-Gerlach gave the Dragons the 67-65 lead with 4:04 left in the game. The Dragons would not relinquish the lead as the Golden Eagles fouled in the final minute but the home team hit all of their attempts from the charity stripe to give them their twelfth win of the season. The Dragons, currently leading the NSIC in free-throw percentage, hit 32-of-38 attempts from the line in the game.
Nash-Gerlach shot a career-high 32 points, which was only six points short of the Dragon school record of 38. Twenty-four of her 32 points came during the second half. The senior did however, break the school record for free throws in a game, with 16.
Charette also had a career high 17-point game, 15 of those in the second half, nine of which came from the free-throw line. Jetvig scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds in the game.
The win improves the Dragons record to 12-4 on the season and 6-3 in the NSIC. The loss is Minnesota-Crookston's third straight and drops them to 6-9 on the season and 4-5 in the NSIC. The Dragons will host Winona State Warriors January 22 at 7 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
