Dragons Share The Wealth, Dominate Peacocks

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon women looked to take out their frustrations after a three-point loss Friday night on the last place Upper Iowa University Peacocks, doing so by posting their highest shooting percentage of the season (55.2) in route of the Peacocks, winning 91-67.

The Dragons broke out early, hitting their first five three-point attempts of the game, giving them a 24-8 score just six minutes into the game. The Dragons turned to their bench early on as they scored 20 of the Dragons 50 points in the first half. The Peacocks Kenya Howard tried to rally her team with 12 points but the Dragons limited the rest of the Peacocks to only 25 points in the half.

The Dragons fluid attack could not be stopped as they posted 14 assists in the first half as a team, compared to only four for the Peacocks. The Dragons would finish with 24 total assists, a season high for the team. The Dragons won the turnover battle in the first half. The Dragons forced eight Peacock turnovers while only committing four of their own, but also outscored their opponents off of turnovers 12-2. This led the Dragons to a 50-37 first half lead.

The Dragons continued to work their offense early in the second half, led by senior Krista Opheim's five assists. The Dragons would turn to their defense in the second half, forcing five turnovers, two blocks and three steals. The Peacocks were also worked on the glass as well, getting out-rebounded by the Dragons 23-12.

The Dragons spread out the scoring, with four players in double figures for the game, including senior Meghan Rettke who posted her 11 double-double of the season. Rettke had 13 points in the game and finished with 12 rebounds. Leading the Dragons in scoring was sophomore Angie Jetvig 20 points on the night, marking the third time she had reached the 20-point plateau.

The Dragons had big games from both senior Alison Nash-Gerlach and junior Betsy Dickson. Dickson finished the night with 13 points and also had two steals in the game. Nash-Gerlach finished the night with 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds. The combined effort of nine scorers for the Dragons helped them route the Peacocks, 91-67.

The win improves the Dragons record to 13-5 on the season (7-4 NSIC). The Peacocks were denied their second win of the season and first of the conference, dropping to 1-17 on the season (0-12 NSIC). The Dragons will take their show on the road to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on Northern State next Friday at 6 p.m.
