ABERDEEN, S.D. - After falling behind by as much as 13 in the first half, the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons came back to take a 78-75 overtime win over the Northern State Wolves on Friday evening at Wachs Arena.
The Dragons went down by 13 after ten minutes elapsed in the first half, having trouble connecting to the hoop, trailing 18-5. MSUM tallied 26 points in the final ten minutes of the first half to overcome the deficit and take their first lead of the game 31-30 on a jumper by
Jake Driscoll as time ran out.
MSUM came out of the gates in the second half as they scored the first five points of the half as Driscoll drained a three and Dennis WIlliamson hit a jumper in the paint.
Northern State came back to tie at the 15:36 mark as the lead would change hands five more times before the game would again be tied at 63 with 4:44 left to play.
Williamson tipped in a rebound to put the Dragons up by two and completed the three-point play from the charity stripe to put the visitors up by three. The Wolves would tie on the ensuing possession on a three pointer by Mitch Boeck.
NSU took the lead with just over a minute of regulation but the Dragons tied in on consecutive free-throws by Williamson to push the game into overtime, tied at 68.
The Wolves took a five point lead in the first minute of overtime before
Andrew VanHavermaet completed a three-point play to cut the lead to two with 3:38 left to play.
Driscoll would tie the game on two free-throws half way through the extra period before NSU went up by two with 1:36 left to play on two free-throws by Collin Pryor.
Williamson would move his game total to 15 points on the Dragons next possession as he went 1-for-2 from the line to give MSUM the one point edge with 21 seconds to play.
Northern State would put up a shot around the 10 second mark that was rebounded by freshman
Alex Novak, who would in turn be fouled. After missing his first try, his second try would hit the rim and fall into the arms of
Chad Thompson.
Thompson put the Dragons up by two as he connected on both free-throws with four seconds left to play, giving the team their seventh win of the year.
Driscoll led the team with 19 points, hitting all six attempts from the charity stripe. Williamson ended the night with 15 points, six boards and knocked down five of six from the line. Novak had 13 points going 6-for-10 from the field.
Brent Egan had 10 points.
MSUM moves to 7-12 overall and 4-8 in the conference. Northern State falls to 8-11 and 4-8 in league play.
